Interesting Keith....it is not typical for flowers to reduce in size as I recall from bonsai reading in the past, although leaves reduce very easily by being cramped.....that I have personal experience with. I tried one Ipomoea previously, but it was not impressed with my conditions at all....a shame :o) Dan
That's a proper GW handle namesake, isn't it? Nice plant!
Dan,
Doesn't it make sense that if the plant's reduced in its ability to grow, in all ways, it will have reduced growth, in all aspects, at least in terms of flower or foliage quantity, size and lushness? Isn't that how most of these pachycaul (or just about any plant, for that matter) plants work?
I don't know enough about them to say one way or the other, it just makes sense, but so does a nickel.
I really know nothing about the way this type of plant would respond, but in terms of classical bonsai while the leaves reduce dramatically (or can at least) flowers of things like crabapple or Wisteria do not reduce in size :o) Dan
If this plant were in a large pot rich with organic matter and watered frequently the vines would over take the caudex and be covered in flowers. Mine has little soil in the pot and watered so infrequently there's not enough resources to keep the flowers their normal size.
