Perhaps toning them either darker or lighter to create more contrast would help? To be honest, what jumps out at me is the honey-oak look of your railings clashing severely with everything.

The problem is the railing is overbearing and the grey is throwing off a pinkish tone fighting with the honey brown tones. Repaint a soft soft yellow or I would prefer a tone depicting your railings. Perhaps a tone of cream. Wall accessories can enhance and lighting will help. Even a large green plant will add color but first and foremost, a honey tone of the railings if most important. No colorblocking

If you're sick of the color, I would try gray. You have gray in the fireplace stone to match. The color you have is quite dark and a lighter color might just brighten up both the rooms.

I'm thinking white spindles like suggested and finding a grey paint colour with a green undertone and not a blue undertone. Thoughts?
