Robin-The way you worded your cost breakdown, you say material costs were around $30,000 and labor around the same. Labor was also $30,000? Are you saying that this bathroom remodel "without major plumbing relocation" was $60,000?? US?? Where do you live?

I am about 60 miles outside of NYC and my entire 360 square foot kitchen with custom inset cabinets, granite and appliances (wolf range, two diswashers, double ovens, no subzero fridge) is costing me $65,000 installed. Seems like a lot of money for that size bathroom. Although I really like it and it looks beautiful, it doesn't appear to be anythng that out of the ordinary. Am I missing something that is not in the photos or am I that out of touch?

It is lovely but I still cannot wrap my head around the cost. Yes, it is a lot of tile but boy oh boy, I am glad my new master bath isn't anywhere near that price!

Just a layman here....but how does the water stay in the shower and not run out all over the bathroom floor? Can you trust a rubber insert on the door to keep the water in?

@sharyn - The floor joists are notched to create the pitch required for the water to flow into the drain. These drains are designed to accept 7-10 gallons per minute. Each shower head equals 2.5 gallons per minute, so spillage into the bathroom is not an issue.

This is a beautiful renovation and every detail has been beautifully thought out. As an interior designer, my clients sometimes have sticker shock over pricing, but I can see details here that may be overlooked. For example- the vanity is a custom size, all of the cabinetry has a beautiful (probably custom) finish, the tile work is divine- look at the picture of the water closet- and extremely detailed. This is a "jewel box" with LOTS of detail and as the designer says, it is easy for custom cabinets and tile work to drive up the cost of a job even if the plumbing stays in place, When projects such as this one happen on HGTV for $10,000, typically Lowes or Home Depot have kicked in 50 grand worth of materials and labor.

It is a lovely renovation. For those of us with a smaller budget, if you are wanting a taller vanity like I prefer, you can get a similar look by using kitchen cabinets (3 banks of drawers, 2 sink bases, and finishing touches, of course). Or, if you prefer a shorter height, use the vanity bases with an extra set of drawers and the finishing touches. Now, you can get quality solid wood cabinets with dovetail joints and Blum hardware, raised panel or not, cherry or maple, many different stains, glazes and paint finishes -- and it can be delivered to your door. Nope, I don't mean assembling them yourself either. I am thoroughly happy with my cabinets in my custom built home from KitchenResourcesDirect.com Deerfield line. I got about $35,000 - $40,000 in cabinets for under $12,000, but that included cabinets for my entire house. By the way, they have sales two weeks of every month.

Tile work is very expensive, so if you are handy, then do it yourself. Often you can get professional help for special cuts. I've tiled floors and walls both. It might take me longer, but then, I saved thousands. This new house was "professionally tiled" since it's in another state. But I found tile I liked at a reasonable price, and provided a special listel I particularly wanted (that I got at a 70% discount) and found a way to include a very expensive tile as accents so as to use much less and thus keep costs down.

If you are renovating, you can also cuts costs by keeping the drains and pipes in the same locations and perhaps by doing the demolition work yourself.

Where there is a will, there is a way.

I love that there is a built-in shelving for just bath towels. I'm someone who loves to have a place for everything and everything in its place and custom jobs like these always make me happy in a dreamy type of way. :)

It's a natural stone. You may have to go through a tile dealer. Not all tile is available online. I purchased the tile used in this bathroom from Morningstar Stone and Tile in Topsham, Maine. They have a profile on houzz. They would have the specifics. Good Luck!
