Ayes, nice comfy chair but not too overstuffed or large. and if you can get a smaller coffee table...that one really overpowers the sofa.

Just if you moved sofa on 'other side' would it be too tight? too lopsided next to dining [is it?]. Another try for sofa turned to go under pillar/post, but enough room? still could have 1 or 2 chairs....

Thanks for all the thoughts! The couch can't be switched to face the window because there is an open archway leading to our kitchen space (which you can't see in this picture). Turning the couch would block that. Unfortunately j just bought that coffee table but I see your point! I will try centering couch and start there. Thanks again!

I would put that space to use with a console table and mirror but that would mean having your switch plate moved to the right, which isn't a bad idea: it's stuck right in the middle of the wall practically....

i would take out the semi flush mount that isn't really over or in any one space. also doesn't match much else perhaps get the flush mount that matches the hanging fixture over the table. or a add some recessed lighting over the seating area. that would be a nice touch.

Good point! I was considering getting rid of that semi-flush light actually--- although the space is pretty dark without it. I was also going to replace the light over the dining table, as it's too small for the 10 ft. table. We're going to box in the beam with barn board first and then figure out lighting replacements from there.

I like ideaplace222's idea for a console with mirror (or art) in that space. Maybe even with a couple ottomans or a bench below for extra seating when you need it. Pictures below are meant for examples only (may not necessarily be your preference in furniture style):

Love the coffee table! Have you considered perhaps an angled arrangement? Since the space if fairly square - at least that portion and this is to be a conversation area I would pull the rug away from the wall corner maybe 5 or 6 inches- keep the rug square, angle the couch into the corner add another chair by the window angled in and one straight across level from the coffee table. Google angled living room layouts - there's bunches of great ideas for square rooms. Beautiful home!

Sofa could face the window and be used for "time-out" when someone has been bad.

THANKS FOR ALL THE COMMENTS! I certainly have a lot to think about. If you could see the space, you'd find that it doesn't allow for the addition of chairs. There is a archway that leads to the kitchen and a chair would block access to the kitchen. As it is now, the coffee table already juts about 1 foot into the space. But you've given me some great suggestions and I'll be trying everything out!
