IMO, I would have bought the darker sectional especially since you have children. It would look great with the floors, rug, and the stairs. Plus, I don't believe you would have to paint. I do like the sectional style and if you do keep the present color, a new rug in a darker color would look nice. I would also put a chair between the TV and the fireplace with a small accent table and a floor lamp in the corner, just enough space for a drink or a book. :)

You need some art (lots) on your walls and a nice bright carpet. I suggest a Persian with predominant red

You should use a glass coffee table if you put in a red Persian carpet so you can see the carpet

The more I'm looking at the photos, the more I see gray.....have you considered painting your walls gray-slightly darker than the sectional? The first picture I posted is a pic of your room, the second is a picture of a sofa that looks like the same color as yours...love the accent colors they are using with the gray-same as yours.

As far as wall color, I would go with one of the nice "Greige" colors. A wonderful cross between grey and beige. There are many out there and I will give you pictures below. One is Sherwin Williams Mega Greige. Notice how well it goes with the wood floor and stair railing?

Second picture's wall color is SW Perfect Greige. I think that would look great with your couch.

Other pictures are for the rug, pillows and entire look. :)

I would love to see some red in your room and a zebra rug would be very cool.

The only thing, I would bring more color into a floor rug. Get one you absolutely love, add some pillows in similar colors and a great painting on your wall. That is all you need to dress up your house.

Try a brighter colored rug, possibly with a geometric pattern. Let's say, teal, then add a teal pillow, maybe a teal vase, or lamp, somewhere or a teal tray and then several orange candles. I find pier 1 or even target always has fun trendy accents. I have a similar couch that I love, and a rug, pillows, and other accents that I switch out 3 times a year. Keeps itfresh

Karendumont. Love the second picture. A few people here have seemed to suggest a red/rust color like the Marsala color I keep hearing about. I can get the major pieces but then fizzle out and take forever to get the accents that are really necessary to pull the room together! There should be an online service that let's you submit pics and suggests products for purchase. That would be tempting for me! Someone else mentioned a Persian carpet in red. That's one of my favorite ideas.

The only thing bothering me is the wall color. I like the kind of medium gray idea a couple people have suggested.

@amalids, I have found that there are several interior designers (many of whom you can find here on Houzz under "Find a Pro") that do offer a service as you've described, i.e. "e-design", for a fraction of the cost of a full design service....could be something to consider. I may consider it myself in the near future...however, so far, I've been able to get some really great ideas and inspiration from helpful Houzzers just by reading design dilemmas such as yours.

amalids-the paint in the second picture you liked that I posted is Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore-I think you should take one of your cushions from the sofa to the paint store to try to find a color that works perfectly with the color of your sofa and then add on accent colors from there. Once you have the right paint color, everything else will come together nicely. Love the red/rust accent color you are thinking about doing...and you already have the ottoman to start with. Your colour scheme is very close to ours. I have added colour with throws, toss cushions(agree they would slide around on leather) and other accessories. I change the accent colours to browns and burnt orange for fall and winter. I am wondering if a sisal rug wouldn't work better with your casual furniture?

Maybe move the sofa to the left so the fireplace can appear more centered in the area? Also add drapery panels on windows to soften the space. Add a tall plant in the corner for "life". If possible, mount tv to wall ( maybe even a slightly larger tv). Add a new rug and pillows with deep or vibrant colors. Use ottoman as coffee table and place a tray on top to hold beverages, remote, etc

I agree with ocrose about centering the sofa with the fireplace. I don't see the balance that this sectional adds to your room. Your room seems overpowered and closed in with such a large dominating sofa.

Bright colors needed, art, lots of colorful pillows etc, I for one do not like the round brown ottoman,it grabs my attention and and I don't see anything else, just doesn't seem to fit...the color possibly is the wrong shade of brown , either way, it seems out of place...

I would paint out the brick. Leather can sometime need a warming up. I'd get some textiles, throw blankets and pillows for the couch that tie in the colors from that GREAT art work. Maybe if you can, get a bigger wall mount tv. Looks nice so far.

I like your sectional and agree that pillows WILL slide. I see you have a throw. Why not try using that color in a chair for the corner where the round "coffee table" is in one of your pictures? Use the round table for the sofa- or get a larger square one, as was suggested, in a color from your rug. I agree that your two long windows really need some sort of treatment even if it's a simple long single fixed panel that sits on each side, picking up a strong color from the rug- or a color you like that brings brightness to the room. The walls are a great color for showing art work; and if you like it, leave it alone. We didn't have a good look at what you have over the fireplace. Can it be changed with the painting? If not, would it go on any other wall? I realize you need walking space around the sectional to other rooms, so that doesn't allow you to change where you have put the sofa.

I agree that you need some texture and color to warm up the space, and give it a more finished look. To warm up my neutral living room I added colorful curtains. I'd recommend finding a new rug with the accent color you love, and take your cues from there. I also agree that the fireplace brick needs to be painted out, it really pulls your eye away from the beauty of the mantel. I'd also move the tv up on the wall, currently that area is a dark spot which pulls your eye away and will even more if you decide to paint out the fireplace. Good luck!

First, regarding kid "messes": kids should be taught how to treat your home. If they can't be on that nice leather sectional without spilling something or (God forbid) dragging an ink pen across it, then tell them it's not a kitchen table and there won't be eating, drinking or playing on it. Leather needs to be properly treated before you use it, and maintained.

Second, I see a lot of beige. Color is what you need, especially in a small space. Either paint the walls a deep, warm color, or put pops of it in a rich throw, pillows, and rug near sectional. Bring that color into your kitchen, I see beige/white chairs there that could use color.

I love all the comments. I wish I could come up with one but I am definitely style challenged. Thank you for posting your pics. I have almost the exact same room the only difference my fireplace is flanked by a window and a glass door. I have been thinking about a sectional and I like the way yours looks in your room. I have no idea what or how to place furniture so this helps. If I can figure out how to put my pics on here. I will give it a go.

@weed48 - We previously had a couch and two chairs and it always felt very disjointed to me. The sectional feels very cozy and it's already changed how people seem to linger in the room. There's enough room for people to spread apart but feel close together. To me, that was key. I hope to see your pictures. I know it can be tough layout!

Too much neutrals, not enough colors... Great sectionnal, carpet, ottoman, etc. but the feeling I get when I look at that is "sadness". I'm sorry!

Marie. I agree the room is crying for some colors to play with. We'll get there soon I hope! The ottoman was from our old set and will stay until we figure out the next step. Painting the fireplace white or grey, a rug with some colors and then coordinating art are great ideas. Anyone have thought on an easy (online?) place for both? Stationary curtains are a great idea too. Above the fireplace we had a metal wall sculpture that kind of mimics the painting. I think it's too dull now and will need to be replaced. That's how these things seem to be...buy one thing and then it's fun (or necessary) to update the rest!

Amalids, In order to find the right color to paint the walls, paint large poster boards - 11 X 14 and then hold them next to the sectional, your fireplace and anything that you can't move. You want the color to harmonize. I try out several colors by this method before I buy the paint. The big samples give you a good example and you can see the color. The small paint samples that you get at the paint store are not accurate. It will save you money in the long run! You have a lot of good suggestions as far as making the rug darker & with some color in it. You can then use the secondary color for accents such as pillows, pictures or drapes. Get out your color wheel and look at complimentary colors and contrasting colors and then you will know what other colors you can use. Good luck! Your room will be beautiful.

Definitely worth waiting for! I think your room will be great but needs some texture, especially with the leather couch. If you put a throw over the back of the couch and put a pillow on top of it, it won't slide off. Plus I'm thinking that you could be a bit innovate and try things to keep them from sliding…maybe just a coin sized piece of the stuff used in bathtub decals. I actually have a couple of leather chairs and the pillows don't slide at all… Needlepoint looks great on leather but anything big and textured should work. Also I would want to add a coffee table with a large woven tray (or use a tray on your hassock if that's all you have right now. Add some books and a small plant or sculpture on the tray. If there is room, I'd pull the sofa back another foot from the wall so the left arm clears the view of the fireplace box. I'd paint the fireplace blocks black or a dark charcoal gray. Keep us updated with your changes!

I don't think you need to paint. I'm in love with the monochromatic feel of your new room. I have a leather sofa & I have used suede pillows which tend to grip the sofa. I love your area rug as it keeps with the monochromatic feel. I suggest staying with it, embrace it. Check Art.com, Z Gallerie & even look at art on Houzz. Go large and abstract & stay within your current soothing color scheme. I don't think I would paint the brick. Am kind of against painting brick & yours is a natural color in a small amount. I absolutely love the feel of your room, however you will need accessories & art.

I was just at Haverty's today looking at this same sectional! Which color is shown in your picture? Is it the silver/gray or the taupe? It looks kind of beige in the photo, but our Haverty's didn't have that color.....only silver/gray, taupe, dark chocolate brown and black, I think. Love the silver/gray but need a warm color instead. Would prefer lighter than the taupe they had in the store, however. What's the name of your color? Thanks!

Beautiful sectional but wondering how to warm up the room? You'll want to decide first are you one who loves a variety of colors are you a more tonal person? If you like more muted tones you'll want to bring in texture such as a throw with texture not a small thin one. Lamps can add texture such as a burlap lampshade or a silver base to a lamp. You'll want accessories with a little sparkle or texture. Think about rope balls or lateen on a coffee table. The current ottoman isn't the right fit but a transitional wooden and metal one would look good and allow you to have a place for drinks, feet, and accessories. Good luck. You have a good base now it is the fun stuff. You could go to a pottery barn and ask for ideas and the if it is above your budget head to a home goods or online.

One of the great things about the second picture that Karen Dumont posted was that if you added red tones to your room in the manner that is in that picture it would incorporate the red in your fireplace and further harmonize your space.

Not sure if you mentioned that the sofa came in a darker color to imply that you still have the option to trade. If this is the case, I'd consider getting the darker color. It would not only warm up the space, but allow you to get by with temporary messes by the kids, it eliminates the tasks of bringing a lot of color to room by paint, paintings, etc. A couple of curtain panels, an art piece on the staircase wall, and indoor plants flanking the media center should do the trick.

Hey YBX, Initially we considered the dark but we moved some of our other dark furniture in here and it was too dark for us. Plants are a great idea and so is the art. We've move the couch a few inches as people have suggested and that makes a difference. It will be more work, as you said than picking the brown, but I just picked what I loved and usually that works for me (after the process of getting things to go with it!) I'm not too worried about the kid messes because leather allows me to wipe up things more easily than fabric.

Sandradclark, I'm kind of with you on painting the brick. I think it would look wonderful but it sort of feels like plastic surgery whereas these other changes - art, plants, carpets, seem more like playing with makeup. I'm not qualified to take on plastic surgery by myself!

Whynotdecorate. I actually have a couple of pillows on there and they don't move, I think because the seat of the couch is tufted. One things lots of people have mentioned is that texture is missing. Many of the leather sectional pics on houzz feature a shag rug or those super-soft pillows (can't think of the name) or other things to add texture. Someone mentioned a lamp. That's a good idea too.

You may be a candidate for the peel and stick tile if you want a quick and easy change on the fireplace. Not sure how it will adhere to brick, but check out the site to see if this a doable option.

You are fortunate to have such a nice space to work with -- and your sectional is really pretty! Add some accent colors with pillows and throws and it's perfect.

If you like blue-green-gray, a light tone of it (SW's Sea Salt!) should look beautiful painted over the dim khaki walls, and particularly beautiful on your fireplace wall with its white trim. A color like Sea Salt (or similar) also brings no conflict with your white kitchen wall.

Additionally, it would be easy to throw some color on your coffee table/ottoman with a colorful tray, with or without some items on it. You may find out it's just enough color, without going to the major expense of replacing the rug!

amalids-yes, while placing tile over the brick does look tempting, from my understanding, it shouldn't be done bc it won't adhere properly to the brick....But I may be wrong-you would have to check with a tile guy.

I would make all the changes suggested and see how you like the brick. Once you've made some of these changes (including adding the rust/reds, adding accessories, and maybe painting the walls) you may end up loving your room and the red bricks may tie in nicely with the red/rust accent colors as in the picture I posted earlier-That picture has lots of similarities to your over-all room. Take one step at a time! I do love the choice you made picking the lighter/gray sofa. Good luck!

the room lacks character, too bland and boring, needs a rug, color on the wall, throw pillows, fireplace wall should be a focal point, side table with lamp, the whole room needs softening up.. it certainly doesn't look inviting...

Your instincts are good to keep it light in a small room. Personally, I would have purchased a rug with more of the art colors in it, especially with children on the scene.

Janroze, thanks! The carpet is from the old set. We are just sort of starting with the sofa and going from there. We aren't wed to keeping the carpet in this room. There's another room where it would probably work better. The art too was from the old set, but we like it although there's probably lots of other things that would work better!

Hi, I have the same sectional from Havertys and here is how I did it. I also tried a grey and off-white rug in geometric pattern, with a little but of yellow and tgat looked fabulous too. I'd definitely paint the walls to show the true beauty and color of the sectional.
