the burl table is wonderful. don't leave it out. loved it on the teal rugs. it adds interest and makes this look collected, not just from a showroom. I love it!

Okay houzzers! I returned the rug, and decided to focus on picking art first. That's not as easy as it should be. Went to a couple of art walks and we could have picked pretty much any thing there, but we would have been just picking for the sake of picking.

To keep it in line with something meaningful to us, we started looking at aviation pieces. A couple of thoughts, we love the idea of WW2 nose art-but finding a panel with nose art is extremely expensive. So, My husband and I found this piece of art....thing is that the piece is 31x31 and credenza (blue one between chairs) is 72" long. I know that the piece "should" be about 2/3 the width but it's something we both agree on. What are your thoughts? Would it be possible to use this? Maybe just add larger lamp or lamps to the credenza to help pull it together? Or is this just not the right piece? Or if you know of any aviation art ideas please pass them on. Again, than you for all your help!

P.S. I also moved the burl table back into the room. Yes, it does create some design challenges but it's us and we love it!

Since your taste in art is so specific (and interesting and unique), I believe I'd have a custom piece done. Was that one of the options? Sounds like this would be an investment rather than a "placeholder".

@indomom, yes I guess it's specific and unique but we would like to buy something that means something to us and not a place holder! I can, and have, spent money on certain things just because, but then we are left with just another piece. I have looked at custom pieces but like the nose art panels it gets really expensive. I think I'd like to keep it unique but with out the price tag, but that may not work. If we were older, and our kids were out of the house, I would consider an investment piece, but we aren't in that situation yet!

If you post a good pic of the piece you love and a pic of the cabinet with nothing on the wall, I am betting our friend, grover, will help you see what that size looks like, close enough. She may add the rest to fill in the sides, too. CROSSING FINGERS and SHOUTING out to grover!!!

Annyjean so great to hear from you again! I know you said to find a piece to be about 2/3 but I haven't found any thing really. I'll post a better pic of the 31x31 piece and maybe Grover can work magic.

I am not tied to the piece, my husband and I like it, not an investment kind of thing, but not exactly a place holder either. Idk, would love to purchase the WW 2 nose art, but unless I find something less expensive, not happening any time soon.

@groveraxle...thanks again! We do love you! That really puts it into perspective, doesn't it? I'm not good at this kind of thing, but it does look pretty small, don't you think? As you guys have an eye for this, would this be acceptable or a no go? Finding a piece between 46" and 48" wide in aviation art is gonna be hard.

I think because it is off center and has the large lamp in the open space on the wall, it is ok. Your wall/art/cabinet might be the "rule" breaker!!! Too many times, people hang just that one small piece over a couch and then wonder why it looks....off. Well, nothing is there to balance it. You have balance. BUT I might be off. grover, your thoughts?????

My thoughts? Before you buy the piece, tape a 31" square piece of paper to the wall. Play with whatever lamps and vases and bowls and boxes you have to get a sense of how you can balance it. Alone the piece would be too small, but with the right accessories, it will be just right!

Just to give you some reference, this canary art is a 35" square and the blue dresser if 59". Grover helped me in this dilemma and it was great to see how it would all look before I bought. Not sure why Houzz puts the weird "by Ann" on the pic when I pull a pic from my private ideabook.

Abbyjean, I don't know about "rule breaker" but it may be possibly to balance the piece with the lamp and another accessory! I'll show my husband grovers work and see what he thinks.

Groveraxle, thanks for your feedback! I'll do as you suggest and tape it out and play with balance. In your image, and Abbyjean mentioned, the art piece is not centered-is that intentional? I am really a symmetrical kinda gal...but willing to think outside of the box! Just curious. Thanks again.

Ann, I love that art piece! Very fun and unique. I just told my husband last weekend that maybe I should pick a piece that's not so serious, fun and different than what I would normally choose (which is why I started looking at aviation art, instead of abstract, or landscape art).

Not sure if this will be an idea to cosider to not, but I love the burl wood table because it makes a statement about who you and your Hubs are. It works. I do not love the rug but a thought came to mind that when I look at this table I see a 70's vibe and I think a totally deep shag rug wtih fluffy fibers and long silky strands would work with this table. And they come in the yummiest colors too. Maybe a deep teal to complement the warm wood tone. Then just add the color,of the rug to accessories in the room. I don't think I would do a large rug but enough to 'frame' the wood table. Good luck with all our comments. Hope you can decide!

Criticalaoa, I think if the art you were considering was larger, centered would be fine, but due to its smaller size, off center would be better - or if you like centered, maybe a bit bigger choice would be better.

Sandra, after seeing Grover's canary over many months, I finally had to give it a home in my home. I've loved the canary for a long time, lol:)

criticalaoa, yes, I intentionally put the art off center over your chest. You could do something symmetrical, but I find asymmetrical balance to be much more interesting. Besides, the wall behind the chairs is already asymmetrical, so it makes sense to continue with it.

Okay @Grover and @Ann, here are a couple of pics with paper taped up, thoughts? The first is centered the others are off centered. The lamp is 30".

I showed my husband Grovers image and he said he "kinda" likes it....that's an affirmative from him :-).

Unfortunately, I only have three sets of lamps in this house, the one in pic is the bulkiest of them all. I'm not sure how I feel with the asymmetrical position, but I guess if I accessorize it properly It could work. What if I placed two lamps and centered the art piece, is that an option? That lamp is the perfect heft and height. It might even be the perfect color with the table and the art. Pics 2 and 3 are perfectly balanced. In pic 4, the sculpture is a tad too tall. Pic 1 is too heavy on the left and doesn't work.

Pic 2 is my favorite. You have such a fun home to SHOP in!!! That lamp is perfect. LIke the heft, like grover said.

Don't worry about putting an object partially in front of the art. It is layering & creates more interest. Have we resolved the burl wood coffee table position?

You must keep it in the room. Change other things to fit it. I guess that is what you are doing now, huh?

I really liked adding the nature into the art so it would coordinate with the art of the burl table.

Yep! Just need a black lamp shade and some pretty plush black (solid mad patterned) pillows to go with it.

Okay, went looking for art again yesterday...not successful. So, I am wondering if either of these two pieces from other rooms will/can work as a placement/free filler pieces until we find something we love? We still like the wood nose art posted earlier but not willing to purchase as of yet. And another idea as to picking something meaningful...I have a photo I took on a trip to Zion that we could have blown up and framed. It would bring nature to the wall and help tie the room to the table. When I get home I'll post the Zion pic for thoughts.

Hang the square red abstract. Hang it off center like I did with the nose art. Keep the lamp there. Find some lumbar pillows with a bit of red.

The red art is a good size, has the right colored framed and background to work with the surrounding area and lots of accent colors to choose from for your room.

Now you're cooking!

I have my own reaction upon seeing your red art - not up close but -

the table has a macho presence, like a beautiful man; and the red art answers back in smooth refinement, even so, she understands him.... ?!

Thanks Grover! I'll get the red pic up, off centered and look for some lumbar pillows with red. I will be happy to just get this room moving in some direction! I'll keep you all posted with updates.

Abbyjean, thanks for hanging with me through these two dilemmas! I always look forward to hearing from you. Your right about multiple colors to pull from-I am going out of my comfort zone a bit here...as you can tell with my choices of furniture, I don't like to commit to anything, hence the neutral pieces! :-). I always figure if I keep it boring I can decide later how to bring color and life into the space.

Sandradclark, glad to see you back! Yes I've removed the rug and replaced the burl table-glad you like it! Now I'm going to pick art before deciding on a rug. We really want something aviation related, and haven't found just the right piece-with the exception of the nose art a few post up. Until we decide if that's the piece for us I'm trying to find something that I own to fit the bill in the meantime. I agree that the Zion piece relates well with the burl table...tying the nature aspect of the two. But so far, your the only one that picked that one ;-). I too love it, but maybe it's too bland/neutral. The red art one does allow other colors in to help coordinate things though; it also has some nature in it...the leaf. I'll see what the hubs thinks when he gets home. I have the red one there now so I'll give it a chance to shine.

The table is so great that not even nature art can compete. Let it dominate,

and give him a red tie to 'wear'.... :) sorry so long, gotta go eat something.... baked.

I like the Zion art. I didn't choose it because the aspect ratio and orientation make it a bit more difficult and I didn't have time to Photoshop it today.

Georgianne4, I purchased the rug for $299 at home goods (8x10). Good luck, it's a beautiful rug...unfortunately I returned it due to design issues with my burl coffee table.

I am new here and this is my first answer so I really hope not to offend. I just learned of this site but I've been pretty active on Pinterest for the last 6-8 months and I've actually got what I consider a large following on there so hopefully I will be as appreciated here eventually. I just read where you returned the rug I guess so it's no longer an issue....Yay! I was of course going to be polite and offer corrective options but I am very happy that ypu removed the rug from your living area....I wasn't a fan at all, so consider this one more person confirming you made a good decision. :-D I'm going to end up spending hours upon hours later, hopefully later today, uploading my pics to this profile/site and my "ideabooks"....hope I can be of actual help to you some time soon and vice versa.....xoxo
