Removing Radon

I tested for radon and I got a 6.1 (4 being the cutoff). I've spent some time looking at a bunch of youtube videos on how to get rid of radon and it can be a bit of work. Seems like if I hire a pro, its going to be 1200-2500.

Overall, the general theory seems to be to pull that gas out from under the slab before it can get into the basement. This involves drilling through the basement floor and setting up a bunch of pipes.

Since we don't use the basement much, I was thinking of actually running a 4" pipe to the outside and having a small fan on the basement floor push the air into the pipe and out. This would generate negative pressure in the basement which in return would pull air from underneath the mudroom door into the basement.

The other option is to perhaps remove a couple of weather strips I put on the outside door that goes into the basement.

Any opinions on this?

We had radon remediation done in our basement using the sump pump pit. They capped it off after installing pvc pipe with a fan pulling the gas up and out through the pipe going through concrete wall. Outside, the pipe has to be above roof line to exhaust and not be drawn back into the house. No shortcuts on this job should be taken. If you can't do it correctly, hire it out.

Radon is radioactive and is the second most frequent cause of lung cancer after cigarette smoking. This is not a casual DIY job. For the sake of your family hire a professional.

You really can't put a price on your health. Hire a professional. $2,500.00 doesn't seem to be that much compared to medical bills associated with lung cancer and an early death.

I understand the dangers of radon. If below 4 is considered okay, and I am at a 6, I am trying to figure out if there is a way to lower the PPC count. This is why I am posing this question. Obviously if I dont have a solution, I pay the big bucks.

You need a solid professionally installed radon mitigation system. Period. 6 is way too high.

pegjustpeg above making the exhaust pipe above the roof line. I agree. Just blowing outside thru sideways out the wall not good, for the same reason you would not blow the smoke from wood burning fireplace...that vent also needs to extend above the roof line so many feet.

Here's a sad story i read in newspaper : In a power outage someone started a generator outside their home. Good idea locating it there. Unforunately it was located to close to the house. Carbon Monoxide found its way in and killed the occupants. So, go with pegjustpeg suggestion
