Style of my house?

It may not seem like much to some people, but I have been drawn to this house since I first saw it when I was a little girl. Since then, I have watched it over the years, always wondering what it looked like inside, how old it is, who built it........ Well a year ago it went up for sale, needless to say, I finally can call it mine! I still sometimes sit in the living room in disbelief that I'm actually in it! Anyway, I've learned alot about its history, and I have tons of projects that I'm working on and more in my plans. I try to keep its history, age, and style in mind but over the years way too much has been changed. It was built in 1900. I'm confused on the style and I would also appreciate any ideas on exterior color, curb appeal or remodeling... please help.

What a beautiful house, I see why you've longed for it. Since you know it was built in 1900, I would say its a lovely farmhouse. It may have had an addition to the second floor over the years which created the hip roof? It looks like it may be 2 colors, white and yellow? I am not a pro, but I would think that unifying the colors would be more authentic. I also would suggest changing out all the porch metal rails and posts and replace them with a more appropriate wood posts, spindles and railings. Hopefully this will bump up your dilemma and some pros will chime in and give you lots more advice! Congratulations!

Also I would suggest removing that one set of shutters.

I would also say farmhouse style and venture to extend that to prairie style. Although not the flat roofed mansions designed by frank Lloyd Wright but in the same school of design. There is a prairie farmhouse magazine that you might want to subscribe to. Congratulations on getting your dream house. It's like a story in a frank Capra film. Have fun.

oh yes! I definitely plan to take away the metal mess that is on the porch . The yellow siding was added by someone a few years ago, I believe to hide the damaged siding that's behind it. It is metal siding. I plan to paint the exterior in the spring. I'm still not sure of a color yet. There is also a breezeway or covered walkway from the bavk door to a small building, I think it was once a smoke house maybe?? I'm not sure. Either way it is my life size doll house, and I will post pictures of what I've done so far. Thank you for all the advice. I will take as much as I can get.

I think your house is charming and I think it is probably an American version of late Victorian style. It has definitely had some changes over the years and the porch in particular seems to indicate this. If you took the porch back to a wooden painted style and painted the entire home white I think you would be near perfection!!

Love your intro about the house. Very happy for you. The searching for history in the area, about the home and former owners can lead you to old photos perhaps?

just a few things I've done so far.... the upstairs was considered an attic, the rooms were very rough but, with beautiful original bead board. I opened up the attic and made 3 of the rooms bedrooms, with the one room left, it will eventually be a very large bathroom. Coffered ceilings in the living room (I definitely needed something to support the weight of the room upstairs) please feel free to add ideas....... I appreciate the help.

You have a Queen Anne house, a pyramidal (hip)roof with a dormer.

OH WOW!!!!! You are so RIGHT!!!! I would have never even thought of the Queen Anne style!! So...... With that being said, I guess I should read up on this style of house before I go any further with my renovations! I can only hope the things I have already completed will fit . Thank you so much!! It truly is my dream house! My family calls it my life size Doll House. I've been in love with my house for as long as I can remember!! I plan to be right here for the rest of my life. I consider myself very lucky to say its mine!! I hope I can make it even more beautiful and bring it back to life but tie in as much of the original state as I can. Again, thank you!!

Kristee, take a look at this house for some inspiration. It, too, is Queen Anne with the same roof line as yours. It is all about before and after. Quite lovely.

Absolutely love your house and your story. An all white exterior would be terrific. The only other change I'd make is to change the door to eliminate the fan shaped windows. A solid door or one with a square window would be more appropriate. Just wondering if your current door could be modified and maybe even painted a color for a little zing.

@JudyG, thanks for the Queen Ann reference. I had no idea they had hip roofs, and it gave me an opportunity to research and pass the time while riding to Florida. Priceless!

Judy G, thank you for the suggestions, and for taking the time to share the picture with me. What I had in mind for the porch is very similar to that, except the columns will match the columns I had built inside that seperates the entrance from the living room, and upstairs.
flopsycat1, THIS door is GORGEOUS!!! I definitely plan to change the front door!!! The entrance is so dark, and I love having natural light in my house, especially when
it shines on the living room floors!! They are the ONLY thing that were left and taken pretty good care of!!! The front and back doors are the same right now, but that will soon change. My idea for the exterior as for the colors....... Paint the house white, and the porch gray, foundation will be just a little darker gray than the porch. As far as the yellow vinyl siding, I know I wont keep that, but I am not sure if I should replace it with the type of siding that's on the rest of the house, which is aluminum, or do a gray cedar shank on that part?? I don't really know what would be best. Or maybe replace it and paint it white like the rest of the house. The door will be barn door red, which is more of a burgundy with warm undertones.
The doors will definitely have more glass!! I would love to find something similar to the picture.
Thoughts anyone?? Sorry but I LOVE getting all these ideas :)

Kristee, here is an excellent article on the Queen Anne style which might help you select appropriate finishes: https://www.roanokeva.gov/85256A8D0062AF37/vwContentByKey/C209EC71F1EA98F48525796B00632B9C/$File/QueenAnne.pdf
