Very nice job indeed, I would also paint the front of the stoop...can still see the brick work there, keep all together and the same. I would also add some art leaning in the middle of the mantel.

Nice and agree looks better. Plan to do the same to my red brick fireplace. We also have a brass fireplace screen and intend to spray paint the brass trim instead of paying for a new more updated screen. Might be an option here as well.

i used masonry paint. I don't think the outside of the fireplace gets that hot.

Concur with patrick, exterior is not apparently an issue regarding heat resistant, so you can go with white, black, other options. More costly but apparently can also tile over the exterior of a brick fireplace. However, interior or fireplace screen is limited to heat resistant for a working fireplace, same as what is used for outdoor grills or pits, etc. There are articles online covering this topic. Again, I think its more about updating the look to fit the environment its in, and I think the initial example and other posters have shown the range of easy to do updates to a dated brick front. Especially if its the only red brick element throughout the house and property...

Dothill, the most important step in painting a fireplace is to start with a clean, dry surface and then use a masonry primer so that the top coat will adhere properly. If you're going to a black or dark color, have your primer tinted dark gray for better coverage. White primer for whites or light colors. Once it's primed, you can use regular latex paint. I typically advise a satin so that any dust or soot can be wiped off. Mind, this is for the outer face of your fireplace. If you're painting the interior firebox, you need a high-heat BBQ type paint.
