Lynn - in the rest of your home, what are your colors? Of upholstery, of accents, of favorite art . . do you have upholstered dining room chairs, for instance? What rooms are adjacent to the kitchen and what colors of upholstery do you have there .. . Also, can you post a photo so we can see the shade of gray you selected for your countertop? There are about a dozen shades of gray . . .

we are redesigning our entire home, kitchen was the first. Currently we have light hardwood floors and black couches in living room w/ fireplace, our dining room (separate room beside kitchen currently has oak dining table, oak hutch, cedar walls and burgandy paint. oak and gray / oak and charcoal work well - consider mustard as an accent, and definitely stick with the light gray uppers instead of white so some of the oak will work well. You might chalkpaint your hutch black with annie sloan . . . . cedar walls when washed with beige paint (like sw believable buff) create some gorgeous natural gray tones - look like driftwood. I would lose the burgundy paint . . i'd wash the cedar walls first and then go for a soft taupe / warm gray on the walls. . that would actually inform my color choice for the top cabinets. . you may find that an off white like sw wool skein is the perfect upper cabinet color . . don't choose your upper cabinet color til you wash the cedar . . . if you like the idea of driftwood.
