I would think to build the mantel around both openings. its ok if not centered on whole wall. what is the purpose of the second opening? if not in use, may be best to fill with brick.?

once you center the mantel above the are of two openings, put something on that ledge to add interest like a tall urn with branches or decorative fireplace accessories

Hi there, maybe you already thought about this, but here is a link for "off center fireplaces" on houzz. This might give ya some ideas...I'm not sure what the opening to the right of the fireplace is, can that be covered? Just off the top of my head, not knowing your style, I would add a wooden beam-like mantel the same length as the built up base. You can place your fire-tools on the right side or a vase etc to help visually balance the empty space on the right.

you can probably pull out the brass door and use high-heat spray paint to get rid of the brass color without having to buy a new set.
