Choosing furniture size

Just built a disability house--no halls and easy wide open floor plan and large doors. My great room is 19 feet by 19 feet. I need a sofa sectional. The one I really want is 153 inches wide. It leaves only 3 1/2 feet on each side, even though the one side is open to formal dining and the other side the backyard wall. I am afraid 153 inch wide is too large. What is largest size sofa width I can buy with a 19 by 19 open plan? Thank anyone in advance for advice. I need minimum 3 feet on side with wall to fit me and service dog to pass easily. Take your floor plan to the furniture store with you. They have programs that can draw it up for you to see how it will fit.

3.5' is more than enough for wheelchair access. My husband mostly uses and electric chair which can maneuver in my older home with 36" hallways and the bath door is only 27" and he can get in there. Unless they are using one of the extra wide chairs, that should be fine. One thing we've noticed is that it's the corners that are hard to maneuver with a manual chair, so he could go down the hall but turning the corners into the rooms was the hard part.

thank you faefrog. No wheelchair, just a service dog for stability--we are fortunate to be more flexible than a wheelchair--thank you again so much for taking your time to write.

Well I'm glad that you don't need the chair. You may want to tape it out on your floor and just try it on for size.

never even thought of that, I just used a tape measure and had a one-dimensional view, but I think I will pencil the entire sectional shape on floor before they lay tile next week ! Another great idea--many thanks.

My partner is spatially challenged....I always lay out exact furniture placement and dimensions to better help visualize the space. For open concept, you also want to think sight lines (is the sofa too tall to see the tv from the dining room, for example)
