Removing popcorn from concrete ceiling in condo

I'm in the process of remodeling a 30 year old condo. The ceiling had a popcorn finish over concrete in the living/dining and the bedroom. Has anyone removed the popcorn and just left the concrete? Will the older concrete still look nice? Any other suggestions as how to finish the ceiling?

the building was built in 1983, so I think I'm safe on the asbestos. I will think about staining the ceiling after. thank you!

Asbestos was used in some materials up to and including 1990. Best to be safe and have it tested.

Another possible option is to cover up the stucco with stretch ceiling. This will take up less than one inch of room height.

Stretch ceiling is perfectly smooth, so much so that our most popular texture is high gloss. It's also completely recyclable, and it has both thermal and sound insulating properties.

We carry over 280 colours in high gloss, matte, satin, and canvas textures, and the membrane is digitally printable so you can turn your entire ceiling into a mural! It also comes in a translucent version that we can install in front of LED lighting.

Please feel free to browse our projects for your ideabooks!

Stretch ceiling would completely seal in your popcorn stucco, so potential asbestos would not be a worry any more unless the stretch ceiling is removed. It lasts a lifetime and comes with 10 and 25 year warranties.

I agree that asbestos testing is required. The "1983" date is too close to call. In theory asbestos was supposed to end production in N. America...but the retailers were allowed several years to sell-off the "old stock"...that means some homes in Canada have found Asbestos in builds as late as 1993.

Your building is at risk for having used "sell off" asbestos products. 1983 is cutting it too close to say that you are "safe". A test can cost $25-$100 and is well worth the peace of mind.

Maltby Design is right, even though Asbestos was no longer in production after 1980, companies and stores were still allowed to sell whatever stock they had left.

No one mentioned how to best remove the popcorn ceiling from the concrete. I'm in a condo, built in 98, and it looks like the popcorn has some sort of tape under it?

Any suggestions for removal? I'm looking for the exposed concrete look. I'm doing polished concrete on the floor.

My sister bought a 1983 condo, then realized all her popcorn ceilings had asbestos. She thought 1983 construction was safe, but apparently the materials used predated the ban.
She had it all done and flat ceilings installed, at considerable cost (I think it was $25,000 for all her ceilings and a few walls). For me, I would have lived with popcorn, for her, it was unlivable. I would suggest having it tested before deciding.
