Need help with 4yr old bedroom

Everything can be change except the curtains too much $$, but now I"m having a hard time to decide on paint color and bedding or other ideas. My husband did the headboard trying to match the curtains and now I see to much boy color and not girly enough for my daughter who thinks she is royalty. Please help my princess need a place to enjoy and keep dreaming on her magical kingdom.

Blue for boys and pink for girls...that's only been the case for about 100 years.

Tell your princess her room is ROYAL blue!
I think I'd get a white goose down comforter for the bed and pink sheets and pillowcases.
Any suggestion for paint color? Should I paint her ceiling as well. Thanks!!! That lavender was her baby room.

If think a "foxy bebe" would enjoy the sophistication of these colors: SW6495 Great Falls to pick up on the drapery color as an accent wall behind the headboard. Under the chair rail in SW6235 Foggy Day and above in SW7649 Silverplate. Accent with pillows in her favorite pinks on white bedding as Darzy suggested.

Here are a few thoughts and ideas for your consideration. It seems as though the pattern in the curtains, headboard and sheets are fighting against each other. Also, the colors in these items don't quite match either. Some are darker while others are more pastel. The room needs a more cohesive feeling to it.

It would help the room feel more pulled together if you could find a comforter or quilt that incorporated both the turquoise from the drapes and the pink from the bedskirt. In the first picture below you will see a bedding set that uses pink and green. Try to copy with idea only with pink and turquoise.

I would replace your existing sheets with a solid color. I prefer white but pink or turquoise would also coordinate. Be careful about more accessories with pattern as you already have pattern in the curtains, headboard and (new) comforter / quilt.

Another idea would be to have more fuschia and pink items around the room as shown in the second picture to help distribute the color for a more cohesive feeling.

As to painting, a pink would be nice. After you find your bedding, match the fuschia or dark pink in the bedding and then purchase paint which is a few shades lighter than the exact match. This way, the room won't feel too dark.

As to painting the ceiling, because of all the angles along the ceiling line, YES, do paint the ceiling. You can see this in the third picture below. If you don't paint the ceiling, you will end up with a very "choppy" visual feeling in the room more like the fourth picture below.

Dress her up like a Princess and take her picture and hang it on the wall. For a little more money, you can upload it to shutterfly and have a vinyl peel able photo sticker made. Have fun!

Continue with your white netting swoop over the table, mirror, and bench, and top it with another sconce. I would paint the sconces in a green/turqoise and gold verdigris.
Pink, turqoise and green can be girly and princessy, and you can combine them in bedding and decorative pillows.
Your ceilings are wonderfully high, so I would do a ceiling treatment to empasize them. With a chandelier!

Thank you so much Michelle, I love your suggestions. I kinda like that 1st picture with the lime green walls. What do you think of painting the room that same color including the ceiling? And recovering the headboard on a solid material?? I agree that I have too much pattern going on. Maybe can you suggest on the headboard material color as well.
Love the idea of a chandelier and integrating more pink. My hubby think I should change the color of the bed skirt to a lighter shade of pink?Or is fine as it is.
I'm thankful for your time and help. I was so confuse and needed someone guidance.

Hmm. Green. I don't think I would paint the walls green because you said you wanted to keep your turquoise curtains. Adding green might be too many colors in the room if you still want to have pink also, although it really is up to you. I would stay with pink walls unless you want to change the overall scheme of the room and go to green and turquoise. G & T are a lovely color combination but not exactly "girly", which is what you said you were originally going for.

As to changing the bedskirt to a lighter pink, that would be okay but then the curtains would seem very dark. Right now, about the only thing in the room providing balance to the curtains is the bedskirt because the curtains and the bedskirt are both strong colors. (See Design Mode's picture above.) If you don't like the strong fuschia and turquoise in the Design Mode's pictures, then you probably need to move in a more pastel direction, which, once again, means you should change the curtains. So, probably better to stick with turquoise and fuschia and a lighter pink for the walls.

As to the headboard, what color is it exactly? It's hard to tell from the photo. Generally speaking, headboards are considered "furniture" and its always good to keep furniture in a neutral color so that you can change out other things in the room and still use the same furniture with different colors. I might suggest something like a light taupe/gray. This would help the headboard to last through your daughter's teen years with almost any color combinations you choose to put in the room over the next decade. I would wait though until you find the new bedding before you replace the headboard upholstery. It might look fine with the new quilt / comforter.

Here are some more bedrooms featuring strong pinks and turquoise. Do you like these strong colors or do you really think your daughter would be happier with more pastel colors?

I see too many different colors and patterns fighting too. The headboard is very nice, but it just doesn't look like it matches? You need to pull your curtain color in. Would the princess like a body pillow from the same fabric? Or some throw pillows?Maybe wrap the headboard in the skirt color? I would also suggest the comforter going too. I do think you need some color on the walls. Either the turquoise or the pink--deep pink.

I hate the fact that people feel that girls' bedrooms 'should' be more pink than blue. I think the blue is a little bit more classy than it would have been in pink. So much so that I would take the pink away completely. Change the bed valance/skirt for another plain blue fabric to match the headboard.

You are right, a change of wall colour could allow the blues to sing a little more. A gentle taupey colour would be restful, and could be easily reworked as your daughter grows up. To add the princess factor I would accessorise with a few bits of gold, a pair of big gold curtain tiebacks and a gold stool for her desk.

If you're up to a DIY challenge, you could make your own 'French Chateau' stool out of an old piano stool you could find on EBay or Craigslist. Take off the old upholstery and spray in gold paint, then reupholster (staples, padding and brass upholstery pins) using a coordinating blue velvet. A few mismatched coordinated cushions could be brought together with some gold piping or tassels. A big bean bag for the floor is a comfortable place to sit and read a book http://www.fatboyusa.com/products/

Color choices for a room for adults and families in a home and color choices for learning spaces for children MUST be approached from different perspectives.

To quote Faber Birren, "A haphazard indulgence in bright accents - rugs, furniture, accessories - may be charming and all that, but it is largely meaningless. What may be done in a home is no one's business but the owner's and [the] decorator's, but if the physiological and psychological needs ... are to be served, colors should not be chosen on whim or impulse."
From "Color and Human Response: Aspects of light and color bearing on the reactions of living things and the welfare of human beings"
    Van Nostrand Reinhold Company
    ISBN 0-442-20787-5

It is doubtful that someone on Houzz will have expertise in the area of the impact of environmental color on the learning capacity of children, and the physiological response of the human child's body to different colors. I suggest you devote time for considerable research in this area. Be sure you are keeping in mind that you are looking for the effects of color on CHILDREN. (There is a wide range of research in the area of the effects of color on adults, as noted in the post above.)

I think you should paint that walls a light warm yellow and add more hot pink

@eztia - are you agreeing with me that a more subtle palette might have an influence that bright pinks and blues may not?

Ha I would add lots of color. How about painting the room a bright pink and adding yellow with other accessories and pulling it all together with the bedding. I love this comforter cover from Ikea http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60221485/ to pull it all together

    @decoenthusiaste.
These parents are responsible for the growth and development of their four year old girl. They have asked for help with color.

Research done in Germany, many years ago now, shows that children whose classrooms were painted tan had lower intelligence scores than children who learned in classrooms painted yellow or blue.

I am concerned when the colors tan, gray, or taupe are suggested for a very young child's environment.

It is my opinion that choosing colors for a sleeping space for a young child must take into consideration the temperament of the child, and the physiological AND psychological effects of color on the developing brain.

I believe that pastel colors in the specific sleeping area of the room help a child settle into slumber.
I believe brighter colors are appropriate for play areas.

Another resource for information on child development is the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). To become an accredited preschool in the USA, the NAEYC standards must be met. They have information about all aspects of development for children through the age of five.

I think that children should have a say in their bedrooms. I have never yet met a child who chose tan or beige!

@stagedtoperfection. I agree that the child and parent should work together on the room.

You spent a lot on the window treatment and your dear husband made the headboard. Make those work first. What if your husband framed the headboard to the same height as the window treatment and painted it the color of the curtains? Now the same color and dimension is on the wall. A soft green on the wall and less pattern on the bed.

It's a room for a little girl, and it's in blue? I should say girls will love pink curtains more. It's not true that curtains should cost much. Here I have news you may think too good to be true.

See the attached photo. One panel of 140 cm * 213 cm only cost $30.5. If the window is around 140cm wide, you need to order 2 panels, that is $61. Plus a flat shipping rate of $12, the total would come to only $73.

Just $73 to change the overall look of your daughter's room, think about it.

Just have to say I had a bubble gum pink girlie bedroom with a rosebud bedspread as a small child and HATED it! It was my mother's fantasy room for a little girl, not mine. I covered the wall with posters until my mother agreed to paint it a different color. Put in the accent colors that your daughter wants, whether those are pink or something else. Even little kids need to express their individuality. But if she hasn't complained about the blue then leave it alone.

    Great bones in this room!
I know that you want to keep the drapes, but they are a little old for a 4 yo room. I would hang them up till she is older and ask her what she wants.., whats her favorite color? Pick out a few fabrics that you like and let her choose. You can get very reasonably priced curtains at Loews, Hobby Lobby, Target, etc.
Love the headboard but can't really tell the print on the pics. Great for a shabby sheak look, but a little old looking for a Princess...how about a sequine material??? Makes a darling headboard!
Love the crown cornice over the bed...but too dark...get a can of spray paint and give that a happy regal look!

Just did my 4 yo old granddaughter's room just as she wanted...rainbow colors. Each wall is a different color...orange sherbet, lavender, green apple and ski blue and hot pink. all of these colors came from her comforter. Drapes are from Loew's...purple with sequines. She loves her room and the first thing she says when anyone comes into the house is, "come see my room!".

Good luck. Would love to see after pics:)

I didn't read all the other responses, so forgive me if I'm being redundant. I think a jewel toned room would work great. Keep the turquoise and pink, maybe add a rich purple. I think, to add to the cohesiveness of the room, you should change the headboard to match the curtains. Since you said the curtains are not bulging, perhaps you can buy the same curtains and use it to cover the headboard. If the curtains are sheer (I can't tell), use a cheap complimentary blue underneath and overlay with the curtains. It's pretty simple to staple it onto your headboard.

I'd paint the walls a light gray, and for the walls under the railing, I'd add a stencil in a soft metallic color (close to the hue of the wall color) so that it gives it a little bit of shimmer.

The bed color should be solid, in my opinion, at least the comforter. I like the idea of white, especially the pintucked comforters from West Elm.

Last but not least, storage. I'd say the teddy bears and random color toys are adding to the chaos. Granted, you don't need your 4 year old's room to look like a magazine cover, but tucking those bears away in a beautiful chest, or grouping them together by color or size may help.

Hi---Wonderful space-Terrific headboard and drapes! Room has great potential. I think a different wall color is in order to balance the color palette---something in the smokey periwinkle hues---check 1628 Comet, 1629 Bachelor Blue, 1439 Yukon Sky, and 1440 Irises. Paint the lower walls one of the darker shades (Irises/Bachelors Blue) and the upper walls and ceiling (Yukon/Comet)---all can be mix-matched and all are Ben Moore paints.
Add colorful pillows to the bedding and do bring in a solid bedding ensemble-preferably a light/pastel hue or soft white. Pics for color inspiration-pillows, accessories, and such. Hope this is helpful. Keep us posted and Good Luck!

For those of you wondering why I can't change the drapes........The winter months gets very cold and her room is on the north side of the house. We couldn't find 9 ft long curtains that were thermal insulated on any local stores. We got them custom made planning that they would last through her teens. My daughter does like the color. It's just hard for me to convert a teen age curtains to a little girls room"

Turquoise is totally a little girl's color, even though the drapes are dressy. Just mix it with her favorite accent colors around the room and you'll be all set!

I think your drapes are Perfect here in a room fit for a Princess... :)
At the moment in the room you have
    - green head board
    - cyan/aqua curtains,
    - blue sheets
    - mauve walls
    - fuchsia valance
    - khaki (dark yellow) floor, rocking chair and crown
    - you also have a little pink, which is light red

The room actually incorporates all of the colour wheel and still looks GOOD to me. One thing that I like about the room is that the curtains are dominant, so you get floor-to-ceiling decoration. You would probably improve the scheme by removing some of the colours. The yellow/brown elements are the least princess like, but I reckon that it would be more expensive to change the floor than the curtain. Another thing is, isn't paint more expensive than curtain fabric, especially when you are handy and could make up the curtains yourself? I think that it would be easy to tack some cyan and pink/mauve patterned fabric across the bed head to remove the green from the room. The paint in the room is good, would be a lot of trouble to change and is princess like, so do not know why you would change it.

So, change the bed and bed head to cyan/pink/mauve and WHITE. Paint the rocking chair white. Get a fluffy princess rug, perhaps.

Another tack would be to go for a pastels look. That would mean toning down the intensity of the darkest colours. The floor and the curtains, and the crown and the chair would all need to go lighter.

All good points apennameandthata. One thing though, the carpet/floor has got to be considered and currently the walls and floor do not work well together. If the paint and carpet stay, then I suggest the addition of an area rug incorporating some, if not all, of the different colors... CheerS!

I love Design Mode's inspiration photo. The turquoise and hot pink look wonderful, but ask your daughter what she likes.
The headboard reads very green on my screen, but might be very similar to the curtain colour. Yes, the flooring could use something, even some cotton rugs...
Here some bedding suggestion to match the curtains and the bedskirt, from Land of Nod and to help with some neutral white to tone things down a bit...Similar curtain colour for headboardfabric...
