Hi! I live on the Algarve, Portugal. I wonder if anyone has experience with Delonix regia in a similar climate. Mine has grown well for about 4 years, but I still haven't seen its spectacular flowers. By now it's a solid little tree of about 4 meter. Even without flowers it's a lovely tree. Very fern-like. But why doesn't it flower?
Thanks for your reply. The tree is soon 5 years old. Hope to see it blooming soon! The climate in San Diego is a few degrees warmer than here, I believe. We rarely have sub-zero temperatures, though. The thread you refer to, gave loads of good and promising information! Thanks!
I'm just guessing...however if you gave your D. regia a lot of water and fertilizer for example 0-50-50 in the summer, you may be able to force bloom the tree. I suggested this to one person on the Southern Ca. thread last year. Please let me know if your D. regia blooms this coming summer.
You're welcome and good luck! The D. regias are leafing-out here, except for the few that don't loose all their leaves, and they will not probably bloom until July or August depending on the weather. The trees need constant heat before they will develop flower buds.
The summer heat is on and Delonix looks like at huge fern with its splendid leaves. It grows very quickly. I have given it the fertilizer you prescribed (twice), Andy, but no sign of flowers yet. If not this year, so maybe next...!
It may take another year for the tree to bloom. Don't give up hope. I've read it can take from 3-10 years to bloom. I guess it just depends on the tree.
I have posted some new pictures I took on July 24, 2008. These are two San Diego trees that are blooming now.
I will set up a link for you to see the new pictures.

Wow! Amazing photos of amazing trees! Thanks again, Andy. I hope mine will make a show like that one day.... But even without flowers it is a lovely tree. Looks like a huge fern, so I would never take it away!
I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures. Check the photobucket album periodically...I will be adding more pictures soon.
Never give up on your tree. Before you know it, the tree will be blooming. Sometimes certain trees take a little longer to bloom. I think it maybe genetics.
It would love to see a pic of your tree. Have you ever thought about posting a picture of your tree? It is very easy to set-up a photobucket album and just copy the pic into the Garden Website. I'm sure all the non-believers would love to see it also.
If you need help setting-up a photo album you can e-mail at avegas2020@gmail.com. for instructions.
I'm adding pictures of the Sherman Heights and Commercial Street trees in San Diego, CA and the smaller Fullerton Arboretum tree located at Fullerton, CA.

Hi Andy! Amazing trees! A gardener's dream! Mine is not nearly as big yet. I have a photoalbum on the net, but haven't posted a photo of Delonix yet, since it has not flowered. But I'll see what I can do about it... :) If you'd like to see some other plants of mine, check the link below.
Hi! I live in Greece and since the climate is similar with Portugal's I would like to ask you if it is normal that my newly planted tree (i started it from seed, now is 15cm high) has some leafs getting yellow and fall. Is there something I should do as far as it concerns fertilizing the tree - the temparature in Athens nowardays is around 30-35 oC. When is the righ time for prunning my young tree. After first year or should i start earlier? In what wheather condition does prunning may take place? Thank you for your help. Any advice yould be highly appreciated since in Athens noone knows this tree.
