you can also use the weird shaped packing coardboard..the ones that have all sorts of little "compartments". with seeds mine last year lasted just long enough for the seedling to get to a size where i could put it in garden without worrying about constantly keeping it moist or worrying about a mid-size rain or furry little scavenger taking it out. i stocked up this year...and cardboard coffee cups too! LOVE to reuse items like this!

In wintersowing we use plastic milk jugs, 2L soda bottles, almost any container that will hold 3 inches of potting soil. But we don't grow them indoors -- just plant the seeds and put the containers outside. It's great for people with no grow-light setup or little windowsill space.

Seeds are getting old. Looks like only 4 made it this time.

That's a good idea! You can start seeds in just about anything.
I save all the clear hard plastic containers from the grocery store to use as little greenhouses. The ones that cookies, etc. come in and also the containers that you by a roasted, cooked hot chicken in, after washing it very well. Those bottoms are solid to hold the water. I make newspaper pots to sit in the chicken holder and put the lid on. Great seed starter!
