I've been eating occasionally something that grows wild all around here and have been meaning to ask what it was (latin-wise) since I was a little worried that it may have some minor side effect, like cancer or a murderous rage or the like. I was introduces to it by a giggling old hippie (too much weed, I think) potter many years ago.

Yesterday it shows up in a catalog from Maine, of all things. Johnny's Seeds. It's Purslane, it's everywhere, and I thought I was being adventurous...The seed companies have caught on to selling weeds!

I found out about Purslane last year and ate it often once I found it was safe. I'm not much into eating "alternative" foods because I've never found them to taste very good. But Purslane surprised me. Fresh taste, not bitter, sour or any other negative tastes or downsides. I prefer it to many standard plant foods.

Grown as a food crop in India. Suppose to contain lots of good stuff too.

When I thought it was a weed it grew everywhere. Once I started eating it became harder to find.

I just tried some wild arugula, thanks for the tip Juttah. It was mustard spicy, but very good. Not bitter or sour, very nice texture, not stringy, easy to chew. The burn went away pretty fast. It's on my salad list now as an ingredient to spice it up a bit. I think I'll try it on a ham sandwich today instead of mustard.

Wild mustard, I like that name better now that I've tried it, was nice in a ham sandwich. The burn was absent, just a hint of spice which surprised me. I preferred it to lettuce.

We have wild purslane - nice crunchy addition to salads.

One of the cats LOVES cheeseweed (mallow species), so I save it for him.

If something would eat the danged pigweed that would be nice.
