I've been told by the folks at NC State that they NEVER expect the state to lift the ban on Ribes species - both currants and gooseberries. Even though the Feds have and most states have. They should at least consider making a 1000 foot buffer rule like most of the states to the north have.

An easy way to get some is to just buy the fruit at the grocery store and sow the seeds. They need winter scarification in order to sprout. I have only found Red Currants on occasion but I imagine some of the high end grocery stores might carry Black or White Currants. You can also just drive across the border in either direction and buy some at a garden center. Edible Landscaping in Afton VA is only 4 hours away.

The only ones I've seen that handle our heat and humidity are 'Consort' which is White Pine Blister Disease resistant, but there may be others. Sometimes you can stumble upon old homesites that still have the native Golden Currant (the flowers are yellow, the fruit is black) which is not disease resistant and often shows signs of the illness. To me the flavor is the same.

Gooseberries seem to hate the heat more than the Black Currants and the Red Currant really struggle here. People closer to the mountains do better with all of them.

From what I have gathered by now by googling and calling and waiting while put on hold, my best bet is to travel to Virginia to buy them.
