Last year's one really cold night (a low of 9 here in Raleigh) wiped out all of the flower buds on my H. macrophylla. I am almost certain this week's cold means no flowers next summer either, unless you have varieties that bloom on this year's growth. I believe that it would have taken a major effort to protect these flower buds from this cold weather we are having.

Thanks for the reply. You might be right. Fortunately, two are Endless Summer and bloom on new wood, though the blooms in the new wood aren't quite as big and pretty -or at least they weren't last year. I planted all of them last spring and summer so it is a new plant for me. I put cardboard over the ESs and mukch and leaves over the other 4. It might be enough to spare some of the blooms, maybe....

Did your hydrangeas bloom this year? I moved into a house this June and have hydrangeas planted by previous owner that failed to bloom this year. I suspected that the hydrangeas might have been pruned wrong, but she said they were pruned and still bloomed almost every year.

It was such a cold winter that many buds were frozen and failed to bloom. I only had a few blooms on mine.

M Endless Summers bloomed but the other ones did not. They weren't pruned by me, but the deer might have pruned them for me. I have a Nikko blue that I am hoping to get blooms from next year.
