It is out there. It can just be hard to find and Realtors don't always understand the word "gardening". If you are commuting into RTP every day for work you need to pay close attention to which road you will use and what kind of traffic pattern it has. You want to avoid simple 2 lane roads, they get jammed up with all the cars going into RTP in the morning and then going home in the evening. I mean like never getting out of first gear type of crawling for miles and miles. This used to drive me crazy at my old job when I lived in my first NC house.

I live on the south side of Raleigh, right off the I-40 beltline and pretty close to Cary. There are parcels of land for sale around me but you would probably want to build a better home than what is on them now and you would have to clear the land to make it farm-able. Something to keep in mind - a lot of the farmland in this area was used to grow tobacco which is related to tomatoes, peppers and eggplants. So there are lot of pests and diseases well established here even though most of the tobacco farms are long gone. Some people have no problem but plenty of us struggle to stay organic and get a crop.

You could try looking in extreme east or northeast Wake. Still a lot of farms (horse, tobacco, etc.) out here. Some farmland not growing crops is still cleared, or still just tall grass and not trees (yet). Sandy soil, with clay in spots at least around Knightdale.
