redspruce,

Just doing a quick search, I couldn't find a North Carolina state seedling program, a lot of states have them. I did find this link, but they are out of 1 gallon size until September of 2015. It might be worth an email or phone call to them to see if they know of other suppliers.

Good luck!

Funny, I was looking for red spruce seedlings a month ago.

I came across a website of a group trying to reforest areas where native red spruce are gone.

I emailed this guy: daves@labyrinth.net (spelled correctly)

He did tell me in his response that sometimes the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge has extras after their spring planting.

He also said he only sells them by the hundred I think. But email him. Good luck!

Thanks for the link.

NC forest program does not have red spruce.

I think its also illegal to collect seeds from the national forest or I would.

I ordered some red spruce seed off the internet and I will say this seed germinates easily.

I planted two 6 cell flats so far and almost all seeds have come up.

Anything special about stratification or the usual 30-60 days works?

I got red spruce seeds (and other species) with a high germination rate from this store:

http://www.datreestore.com/

the instructions were to soak in water for 48 hours and to sow seeds 1/16" deep. No scarification needed. It worked

The seeds I got germinated with nothing special whatsoever. I had some come up as soon as 7-10 days.
