Is this japanese maple dying?

I've have this young beni schichihenge for its first spring and it has started to brown and looks dry even though I've kept it moist and sheltered? I'd this a sign of vert. wilt? The branches look normal and one or two have branch growth. Will it get through this?

Difficult to determine if it's dying when we can see only a bit of one branch. Please post image of entire plant.

It's probably in a pot and was allowed to dry out a bit. .....or recently planted.
Given a little time in partial shade and away from reflected heat and light and those spots won't happen as much.
I had one for awhile and traded it away because of poor Fall color.
