Northwestern Gardening

August Bloomers

We have a family reunion planned for our house in mid August. I'd love to have lots of plants in bloom and have room to put in lots of new plants. Our guests will be from all over the country; any suggestions for plants that will really impress them? I do have some gorgeous hydrangeas that I'm hoping will be in bloom.

You should have a Brugmansia. The out of towners will be blown away by it! They take lots of water and fertilizer but bloom with abandon in August if treated well.

Fuchsias combine well with hydrangeas and abelias go well with fuchsias. Otherwise there is Floribunda and Polyantha roses, Acanthus spinosus, shrubby potentillas, Geranium Rozanne = 'Gerwat', colored foliage plants...

Dahlias. You can buy tubers now, plant them in May, and have sizable plants blooming their arses off all thru August.

Eucryphia is a good bloomer in Summer and Fall. There are several varieties, I have the Nymansis which has crinkled white flowers.
