Page 36 of the January 2015 Sunset magazine is about growing orchard fruits, has a paragraph on High Density Planting followed by one called Keep it Small where they recommend the book Grow a Little Fruit Tree from Storey Publishing.

I did notice the Plant section of the Sunset page tells you to used amended planting hole back-fill. This is an obsolete practice that was being seen to be flawed by the late 1960s.
