Fina Gardens has it for $37. I bought it from them this year. The root is decent size. Solaris Farms has it for $35. I have bought from them before and their peonies are also very good.

The only site that I know is still sending out peonies that hasn't already been suggested is Chateau CharMarron at 4peonies.com and they don't have a double fernleaf listed, either. They do have Smouthi which is a red fernleaf hybrid. You can probably order one from Hidden Springs for next fall delivery, they already have their 2015 catalog online.

Do fernleafs come in many colors?

Not really. Most of the true fernleafs are red Some are single and some are double. There is a pink fernleaf but it's really expensive (well over $100) and I've only seen it offered at a couple of places. I have seen posts where it's been offered as a fundraiser for one of the peony societies, think it was the mid-west one? If I come across that post again (might've been in another peony forum, think I've seen your id there, too!) I'll confirm the group. I don't think I've seen any true fernleafs of any other color but I'm certainly no expert on the subject.

There are several fernleaf hybrids that have a much broader color range. The size of the foliage varies quite a bit on those, too. They are much more vigorous growers than the true fernleafs in my experience. The roots of the true fernleaf seem to be much more fragile where the hybrids divide like any other herbaceous peony.

The fernleaf with a single pink bloom has been offered at the Heartland Peony Society Auction several times and also has shown up at the HPS table sale. I think we were asking about $45 when it was on the table sale. All of those plants came from my garden,

If you are in the northern hemisphere I would not recommend trying to transplant a fernleaf peony this time of year. Late July to mid-September. Even that is getting late. They begin their root growth very early in the fall.

That is a very special plant, the pink fernleaf. Do you have a pic of a clump shot of this peony? Does it increase slowly as I have read? What special soil conditions as well as location that this peony would thrive in?

Wow, what a beautiful clump. Thank you for the advice of growing fernleafs. I have got some fernleaf peony seeds that I hope to germinate and grow into seedlings. Your information is most helpful. Do you think that it will do better in partial shade or full sun? Or does that matter?

Fern leaf peonies are not the easiest in my experience and from stories I read on a German gardening forum. Mine has good drainage, humus rich soil and full sun but it grows backwards. I wonder if it wil flower this year.

The first year after I bought it my fern leaf peony had 4 flowers. The second year it had 2 and the last year it had no flowers and the plant did not look very happy. My other peonies are doing fine.

One the one hand... Does the plant have good drainage. You might try to get it into a raised bed to aid drainage.

On the other hand... I have had peonies to do very well the first year, blooming from the energy that was stored in the roots that were planted only to struggle in subsequent years until the plant could be established enough to store enough food to bloom again. Perhaps it just need to be given some patience. You could just continue to feed and keep the area clear of competing grass and weeds. That is something fernleaf peonies really resent.

GardenPrince, I maybe wrong and perhaps others with more experience can chime in. But from the photo of your peony, it does not look like a true fernleaf. It maybe a fernleaf hybrid. The reason I say this is because it appears that your fernleaf flowers do not sit at the foliage and the foliage of your fernleaf peony plant do not appear as finely cut as true fernleafs do.

I bought this plant as a fernleaf hybrid. I guess that I am confused as to what would be considered a hybrid and what would be considered as a form of fernleaf.

Could be there are different clones of Paeonia tenuifolia available in the trade. Mine comes from a respectable peony nursery in the Netherlands. When I look at internet pictures of P. tenuifolia I see indeed that many have more finely cut leafs.

Could be that my plant has too much competion from other plants. My picture above is taken in late spring. It is in front of a group of Gillenia trifoliata which is just coming into growth. Drainage isn't an issue as my soil is a well draining (and fertile) sandy soil.

There are countless clones of Fernleaf peonies. The one with the most coarse foliage is Paeonia tenuifolia biebersteiniana with mainly lanceolate (+/- some linear) leaf segments of 3 -6 cm breadth. This is not actually a clone but a form. That foliage should have rather wide leaves. My plant of Biebersteiniana is not much more coarse than the typical single fernleaf peony. The finest foliage is that exhibited by the double form.

As long as the other plants are not shading your peony or crowding it the competition will be OK. Once established the peony can hold its own.

You could just get it off eBay. I think the prices at eBay are usually the same or lower than the ones at the online stores.

I think they should do just fine with good drainage. These are the double rubro flora plena types.
