I think the cactus is perfect. There's even an "Old Man" cactus that grows long white hair. Tell him you saw it and it reminded you of him!!

Sounds like you feel pressured to both attend AND bring a gift. That's not good. I'm sure that he feels the same way!

If you have to go, perhaps a gift of food....candy, homemade banana bread or cookies. His wife would appreciate something like that, too. Not much $$$ but usually sincerely appreciated.

I'm sure that there's a better forum for this type of question. The Garden Party forum is pretty dormant, I think.

If a cactus is too prickly, how about a nice plant of some other type? An herb in a nice pot is always appropriate! If you think of the gift as for his wife, it can actually be nice.

I'd bet that the very last thing a crotchety 80 year old wants is a bunch of useless gag gifts. The food gift would be more like a hostess gift.
