Open Source Pepper Database

http://wiki.juanitospeppers.com

Why did I create a new site?
1. Editing wikipedia source is pretty hard to figure out, especially for more advanced things. Also since it's completely free form the data can't be queried very effectively. All our data editing is done in using user friendly forms and stored in a database.

  1. Wikipedia is very harsh with moderation, especially image uploads. We have pre-negotiated with some websites allowing their copyrighted content. We will not remove content unless asked by the copyright holder.
  2. Completely pepper focused. Will be easy to find everything and keep the site relatively small.
  3. Added a review system for users to rate peppers, there are lots of new varieties coming out and it's impossible to grow them all, hopefully the reviews will help to provide some guidance.
  4. Added a glog system for users to keep track of their grows, and other members grows. We keep the data of the glog and its updates separate from the discussion on it. So you can see the users glog at a glance without having to scroll through all the other users comments. Then when you want to talk about something you head over to the discussion page to talk about it.
  5. All data is able to be searched, So we can do searches like .. I want to see all glogs located near me.. I want to see all people growing bhut jolkia.. I want to see all reviews from juanito.. i want to see all varieties that are brown.. i want to find accession # ..
  6. A Notification / Watchlist to keep you informed about things happening in sections / pages that you are interested in.

I can promise you
1. no adds
2. no premium features(everything is free)
3. Swift Moderation / Bug Fixes

The power is in the users hands to create and update the data.

Will you help us build the most extensive and accurate database for peppers?

Looks good. Thank you for all the hard work!

Jon - I didn't see a way to send you an email. I had started an Excel file with all the pepper varieties that I have seeds for. I'll edit it to remove the info on who I got them from, but I will send it to you if you email me through GW. It might give you a good start (though I won't guarantee all info is 100% accurate as I found out there are hot and mild strains of Chiero Recife).

well the point of the website isn't just for me to run it, it's for everyone to chip in. You can add some varieties yourself!

but yeah send me the excel if you dont want to.

I think i'm going to make a short youtube video that goes over the site basics so you guys can understand easy.

You have 2 different member names? But neither one has Send an Email turned on so I can't email you the Excel sheet. I'll look for the youtube video.

i suspect you meant no ads, as in advertising. otherwise it would be a closed system where no one could contribute information even though the purported purpose is to grow a database.

    yes, no advertising.
anyone can add and edit data as long as they make an account.

Make sure you have the original fotogs permission to use fotos.....they are all copyrighted.

yup, i would like to eventually replace most images from vendors with user images. but need more people to contribute.

I have agreements from pepperlover and buckeye to use their copyrighted content.

This site has a lot of potential, but seems to have a few teething troubles.

Some of the "review" pages don't seem to work. For example I see:
Internal error "Fatal exception of type MWException" when I click on:
    http://juanitospeppers.com/wiki/Habanero_Paper_Lantern_review_001
    or
    http://juanitospeppers.com/wiki/Habanero,_Chocolate_review_001

Another problem I see right now is that many of the pages are editable that probably shouldn't be, e.g. the search page, the "How to Contribute" page and all of the glogs. Not sure if this is easy to change?

It would also be nice if it had it's own top-level domain name. Call it juanitospepperwiki.com or something.

One more thing - you might want to consider making it mandatory for email address to be provided for membership. It's too easy for someone of a malicious nature to create an account for the sole purpose of messing up a bunch of pages.

Those were reviews were from a previous version sorry i forget to check and upgrade them. thanks for catching that.

The point of the wiki is so anyone can contribute. If someone adds a new search or wants to add description that's fine with me. If someone has a better guide for getting started they can change it.

i can nuke someones account, ip, contributions if there is any maliciousness.

    yes but domains cost $

Here's a quick (6 min) video tutorial on how the site works.\

    Fair comment.

I guess if someone does do damage it's easy enough to undo again.

One more issue - the "Users Growing this in 2015" always seems to show "No results", even for varieties that are listed in peoples glogs.

I hope this DB catches on.

You're just trying to get Houzzzzz to buy you out too, eh?

    *grin*

I think this is a good way to test it. Make the pepper heads here work thru the beta version, work out most of the kinks. it should evolve nicely, I would think.

i fixed the problem where pages weren't refreshing immediately. Problem was it was caching queries instead of executing them every page load.

i posted this on reddit, thehotpepper, gardenweb, and facebook. hopefully it catches on =]

This is a cool site, I like the detail info on the peppers like the taste and texture and smell.

Hi JonOklahoma, appreciate your hard work and effort into creating a chili database. I think it is always a pain to see "giant lists" of chili, yet to find that they only have half of the varieties at best.

I do know that Wikipedia is a little bit of a pain, but it is currently the gold standard in user-generated knowledge. I decided that if I'm going to put any effort into chili, it will be where the impact will be the highest. I just figured out how to modify the tables and I'm now adding substantial numbers of chili to the following page:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Capsicum_cultivars

I'm thrilled that you are creating a database. I wish more chili lovers would get more active...perhaps chili and technical IT skills don't really go hand in hand :)

NewMexMike - yes i was adding stuff to that page originally but i made my site easier to use (look at the history you see they remove all my images because i don't upload them correctly). I understand that wiki is much more popular hopefully overtime as my wiki gets linked to it will rise in search rankings..

Jon - surely it would be pretty easy for a man of your talents to write some kind of script to import the varieties already listed on wikipedia into your wiki?

Would save a lot of typing...
