I really like that the lid has safety features so it does not close fast.

Box looks to pretty to put kitchen scraps into.

I agree with EQ.......much too pretty of a bin. You can put that anywhere inside your home and no one would be the wiser.

I have wondered if the smell of cedar might be detrimental to the worms. I don't know, but it has crossed my mind.

I've read opinions that cedar is not suitable for worms.
However, if there is plenty of horse manure , the worms are likely to avoid the cedar
if it stil has cedar oils.

IF it were me, I would use 4 or more layers of burlap for a cover
rather than closing the lid.
Happy worms stay where the food is. Or: remove the hinges and elevate the lid ?

Maybe line the cedar with paper egg trays or layers of corrugated cardboard ?
Egg trays would trap air.
Seems a lot of work -- but this looks like the work of a worker to me.

I've seen a lot of people make bins from cedar so I'm not as concerned with the cedar. I guess I should have clarified that I was worried about the abundance of holes I drilled into it. The cedar issue has crossed my mind so I guess I will see but from what I can tell it should be ok. Thanks for all the feed back.

Cedar is fine, as is redwood. They are both insect and rot resistant. The bin will last longer than if other wood was used, and worms stay in the bed where they belong!
Holes are fine also. Most of my bins have NO bottom and sit directly on the ground.

If you are worried about the holes get some window screen and line the inside before filling it.

I wouldn't worry about the holes.......if the habitat is right, the worms won't leave their happy home. If something goes awry and some worms leave, that's better than having something go wrong and they couldn't escape, guaranteeing their possible death.

Is this outside? Might some mice, voles, etc get into the holes and eat your scraps and worms?
