odd sized vanity what to do?

Okay,
We want to re-do the master bath, currently circa 1987. There's a vanity, toilet and shower in the "bathroom". Outside the bathroom is I guess what you'd call a cosmetics area. It's a single sink set all the way to the right, but the total width is 53". It's looks like a 27 inch vanity with a single drawer attached to it, and the top laid across.The whole thing is snugged in between the wall from the "bathroom", the exterior wall, and the wall for the closet.

If I use a 48 inch vanity I have an annoying 5 inches of nothing between the vanity and the wall. Can I just have the top extend 2.5 inches on either side and center the vanity, or would that look stupid?

I was thinking I should call the folks who we got our kitchen cabinets from (Medallion). That sounds like something to investigate. That gives me an excuse to pick their brains on the plan as well. Thanks.

We had a similar issue (needed an 81" vanity). You basically have two options.

1) You can have a cabinet maker make you a custom sized vanity.

2) You can order semi-custom cabinetry rather than purchasing a pre-assembled vanity or having a custom vanity made. You can use kitchen cabinetry lines or many of the manufacturers also sell bathroom cabinetry lines. The cabinets and vanities come in standard width's, height's and depth's but you can also customize as well.

For our bathroom we ordered two sink cabinets and then a drawer cabinet for in between. We customized the height (we wanted higher than a standard bathroom vanity height) and depth (we had to put on a very shallow wall), as well as cabinet width. We also requested no base kickplate and instead put ball feet on the bottom. This gives it more of a furniture style.

Also you will want to have a filler piece anywhere the cabinet is going right up against a wall. This will allow you to open the door all the way.

You may also want to look at barkers cabinets. You can get the size that you need. Many on the kitchen forum have used them with great reviews.

If you want to assemble yourself look into Conestoga cabinetry. I was able to order mine in the exact size I needed so there were no filler strips anywhere. In my case I did two custom sized vanity sink cabinets and a standard sized drawer bank in the middle. Mine was longer over all but you might want to check their site out to see what your options are.

We used Ultracraft for our master bathroom. Their cabinets are good quality and very customizable. They were one of the few lines that let me adjust height, width and depth to the measurements needed with no kick plate.

Filler strips. Get them a bit oversized (3" for your 2-1/2" gap) and you can scribe them for a perfect fit.

You can get ones to match your cabinet fiish, or get contrasting ones, ie, you can paint them to match the wood trim versus matching the vanity finish. Whatever works for you style-wise.

Just horrific editing on this video, but it gets the point across. In a very manic way.
