quartz counter rounding edges to avoid chip

Our quartz counter edges are squared off and we have had a little bit of chipping around the sink. The fabricator wants to round the edges a bit. Does that sound like a good solution? Does anyone have rounded edges at their sink and can you post a photo. I can't visualize.

    Roundover edges do chip less. So far, my squared off sink cutout is chip-free....but I'm just waiting for the day. I prefer the look of the square for a sink cut out, but you really only have 2 options at this point and I don't think either is right or wrong, just your choice.
    1. Be more careful from now on and just repair the chips as they come
    2. Have him round it over.

    I'm not a fabricator, just wondering how he's going to do that while it's already installed. By hand? Sounds difficult AND messy!

    Maybe some top pros here on GW can advise on this.

    Me personally, I would choose to repair and just try to be careful with heavy pans from now on. I could only find one photo with a rounded edge on a sink cutout. See link below.

    I am a fabricator.

    A competent fabricator could easily round the top edge on site. Usually the biggest problem with stone work at the customer site is the limitation on how much water you can use. Not so much a problem right at the sink. (in a fab shop everything is wet all the time)

    In my shop we always blunt the sharp 90 degree edges. This is an extra step on many edges that are CNC'd like the Ogee and Crescent where the CNC leaves a sharp corner. Most shops today don't do it because it's an extra step that requires handwork.

    This detail is a good example of the difference between a quality fab shop and one that is focused on "pumping it out the door as cheaply as possible."

    I just performed this procedure on site this week. Above are the before pictures.

    I used a 3/8â round over bit on a knuckle dragger (Makita polisher) and gave it a spritz of mist now and then and followed with Viper 3-step pads and some MB 20 on a white pad. Since this top is 2cm, it wonâÂÂt let the bit pass over the sink divider without removing the sink. Fortunately, there were no large chips in that area and I just faked the round over with the Vipers in those areas.

    With quartz, the polishing technique will dull the shine of the resin, and that could be very noticeable, especially if your sink is near a window or other light source. I would have them filled in. My quartz was chipped when it was fabricated and filled in. It will only be as good as the matching skill of the fabricator though.

    Viper has developed a 4-step pad specifically for polishing quartz. It will not dull the resin if used properly. The edge polish does not have to match the factory top perfectly, because they are not on the same plane. It has to be shiny and consistent which is no problem.

    This is before and after of an engineered marble top polished with steps 3 and 4 only of the Viper 4-step followed with MB 12. Same pics, note the unfilled edge chip in the lower right. No burns.

    Guess I've got to show the repaired edge chip now, huh? I used my Invicon kit after grinding it out a bit for crisper edges and contamination removal.
