I always get one big enough to put the dog in when he is full grown. Usually the box will tell you what size of dog it will accomodate. When they are still small puppies, I would put a box in the back of the crate to take up some of the space. This is useful when trying the house train them because they do not want to soil the area in which they have to sleep so you don't want them to have too much space where they can sleep in one area and potty in the other area.

Yes, the size that the adult dog would use. My 10 yr old Golden retriever still sleeps in her crate. It's a Large, or size #400, whether wire or a vari-kennel-type molded plastic.

Agree with the large size crate. We have a 25 lb. Eskimo. He has a friend who is a full size Samoyed. Expect a LOT of white fur!

My Sams loved sleeping in their crates long after they were trained, (I removed the doors) but they destroyed them eventually, so I'd recommend something very sturdy.
