Baby quilt binding question

I just finished a baby quilt on which I sewed binding to front, flipped binding to back and then did a stitch in the ditch from front to secure it. Disappointed that even with pinning the stitching on back isn't straight with the binding. Does it work to sew binding to back, turn the entire binding to front and then stitch the binding by machine to secure? There would be no binding showing on the back and there would be a stitch line say 1/2-3/4" all around the edge on back. Seems like that would make the back neat and tidy. Thoughts? Thank you for always being so helpful.
