Help picking curtains

Hi everyone,

I've attached a picture of the master bedroom in my new house. None of the furniture or decorations are staying. I have pretty much decided to paint the walls BM Indian River, as someone here suggested. The new bed will be low to the floor with a large square white leather headboard and white leather around the base.

I'm looking for some curtains mainly for privacy at night and to block out the early morning sun. Otherwise, the curtains will always be open. I'm considering motorized curtains that would cover the large window and curve around to cover the smaller window hidden by the bedroom door in this picture. I figure when open, the curtains could bunch up to the left of the sliding glass door. I'm not a huge fan of blinds or sheers. This and one other room will be the only rooms with curtains; the rest of the house will be left uncovered, so I don't want some blinded windows and some blank windows when looking in from the outside.

Anyone have some suggestions on curtains that might fit in? I am drawn to simple curtains, nothing ornate or flowery.

thanks for your help!

I think I'd go with either beige, gray or a pop of color if that's what you might like. I'm no expert on remote control panels, but have found some lovely ones at JCPenny and overstock.com.

Are you keeping the rug? What will your bedding and artwork look like?

Good questions. No, I am not keeping the rug or anything in that room. My taste in art leans toward the abstract. I've attached a pic of some pieces I own, and have a house full of others. But suggestions for new art are always welcome...haha. Also attached is a pic of the bed.

If you are willing to spend the money, look at luminettes....

Hi Annie - within reason, cost isn't too much of a consideration since, as I said, I'm only going to cover this and one other window, which is an almost identical setup. I will check out the Luminettes. There are so many brands/types out there that I don't even know where to start! Thanks for the lead! What are the benefits of Luminettes vs regular curtains?

I didn't know what luminettes were. AJ, they look perfect for your situation.

Ripplefold drapery, floor to ceiling. They stack pretty tight.

Those are great. Perfectly minimal and add just the right amount of privacy. I cannot get the Hunter Douglas custom app to work, but would love to see them in different colors/fabrics.

How about something like this, sliding panel track blinds

Tibbrix, those panel track blinds are neat, but I'm not sure if they would curve around to the other window like I need. I am also hoping for something a little "warmer."

I was going to suggest pinch pleated curtains, then I learned of luminettes. I think white would look good next to your choice of wall paint. Another good thing about having them motorized is that you will have little need to touch the curtains.

It makes me comfortable the board reached a consensus on the best type of drapes to use, which I know with this group does not happen often. ;) Ripple fold it is. I do like the options the luminettes offer; being able to adjust the amount of light would be perfect for days you don't want full sun or for when you'd like to stay in a dark bed and watch movies in the middle of the day.

Beverly - I knew from the beginning I'd be out of my league and needed to entrust this project to professionals. Do you have any suggestions on color? Since several of you have mentioned price, I guess I should ask: I was anticipating spending a few thousand dollars on this project - are you suggesting this will cost more than that?

AtomicJay, I would recommend you get a price on both options, the Luminettes & the drapery. Let the sales person provide the pros and cons of each for your particular situation.

I would also recommend a simply fabric that might appear to look like linen but be woven of polyester. These replicas are getting quite good and the advantage is that they will not easily fade from sun exposure like natural fabrics and will not shrink when if they require cleaning.

BTW you can avoid cleaning provided you don't smoke and vacuum the drapes from time to time to remove surface dust.

Too difficult to tell colors on a monitor, but I would either consider a few shades lighter than your wall paint or a few shades darker. The darker contrast might be nicely dramatic for the room.

I love the chocolate and coffee colors you suggested, Beverly. I agree, it will give it a nice dramatic effect. Thank you for your suggestions! I will update this post in a month or two when everything gets put in place!
