Complicated kitchen design help desperately needed! !

I am attaching a link to my post in home decorating as suggested. I am eager to hear feedback on the only plan we have thus far, and really really eager to see or hear some additional thoughts on how we can add a large eat in sized island to this very awkward great room/ eat in kitchen combo area.

Please see link with photos:

Here is a link that might be useful: Photos, measurements, rough estimated layout design sketch

I think, peninsula, rather than an island would be a better choice for your kitchen, if you aren't changing the layout completely.

You can consider continuing the sink counter with an angled cab or two and have a rounded eating area. I couldn't get the shape quite right, but something like this. (Moved the DW to the other side as suggested mama_goose in your other tread).

"Measurements include: fridge wall (west side) to sink wall (east side) is 11'8". sink wall of cabinets is (north to south) 12'6". fridge wall of cabinets is (north to south) 8'.
Entire wood floor area from Great Room carpet through kitchen area (north to south) is 20' 6". Outset area near patio slider (north to south) is 8'0. walking distance between fridge and sink is 7'3" and walking distance between center of fridge and center of stove is 8'0."

    Sketch with estimated measurements

I think you're trying to force an island into a space that doesn't benefit from one. Islands aren't necessary to have a good kitchen.

In my previous home, our kitchen was just a tad narrower than yours. Too wide to be a good galley but too narrow for an island. We bought a butcher block table, I think it was about 30" square. It was very handy and fit the space without blocking traffic patterns. I would often remove things from the fridge and set them on the butcher block from which it was easy to then move them to the sink for washing. Then back to butcher block to prep. Yeah, I used it as intended for cutting meats. Veggies got a cutting board on the counter.

Anyway, I could see you getting something like that and then having an actual dining table in the space between that chair and the kitchen. I think that would be more functional and attractive.

If you're interested in moving appliances around and other potential changes, you will probably get more advice. Best wishes.

Thanks for the input! Sounds like our plans just are not going to work. Oh well...on to the fun stuff of picking paint colors, new countertops etc.
