Acacia invaded by Caterpillars!

My wife and I don't know what to do. We have a small acacia (and I'm not sure exactly the variety). It was beautiful up to a week ago, blooming with yellow flowers. Then the flowers started dying off which I thought was normal. But my wife took closer look and found the tree was covered with yellow caterpillars. Lots of them.
We had seen a yellow butterfly hovering about a while ago and noticed it because it was the identical color of the flowers. Now the caterpillars are also the identical color of the flowers. We are not sure if the caterpillars are harming the little tree and we should remove them or if they are harmless and we should let them become yellow butterflies????
Anybody have a similar experience?
