What kind of vacuum do you have - upright, canister, or something else, such as a stick vacuum? Does it have a beater bar? Is it picking up soil from bare floors?

Is it possible you are moving the machine too quickly?

I prefer an upright vacuum for use on carpeting.

Have you checked the bags &/or filters on your vacuums?

I'm part of a program where a major retailer sends appliances to be tested and reviewed. I've used Dysons, Hoovers, Bissells, Shark, ProForce, and maybe others. They all do quite a good job on my heavy pile area rugs and runners. Maybe a trip to a vacuum repair place for servicing could solve your problem. Good luck.

Make sure the belt is on and the beater is turning. I have never had a Hoover that did not pick up. I had another brand that was very light weight and expensive that did not suck down to the floor. I returned it.

Thanks for the comments. I have a Hoover Windtunnel. It is working fine but just not on that one carpet. Yes, I plan to stop at the vacuum repair shop as son as our weather gets abouve zero-if that every happens!

Oops- sorry if this double posts: have you checked the height adjustment to make sure it's appropriate for your BR carpet? If set too high, the brushes won't touch your carpet - you'll know if it feels easier than usual to push your vacuum.

Our Wind Tunnel has a sliding tab to adjust for floor type and we had the same problem. Turned out that there is a "bare floor" position that raises the head very high and disengages the brush/beater bar.

I tried changing the height and it helped a tiny bit,but not much. I think I've tried everything with the vacuum and nothing seems to work.

Some times on uprights the tube gets full. after changing bag.You still have power -but not 100%. Most models easy to take apart and put back. Did it on my Oreck.
