The reason for the short/high windows and clerestory windows was to allow the light in without interfering with privacy. People from the outside can't see anything inappropriate going on on the inside.

That said, looking at the picture yours do seem to miss that mark.

I would probably opt for a Roman blind.

I think a roller blind is safe (no ropes), modern and shouldn't be expensive. If you wanted a bit more of a treatment, a valance is easy to add and the one below (for a smaller window) is $13 and you already have the rod.

Ohhh you guys are so full of good ideas! I love the slat and roller blind ideas! The roman shade I have looked at in the past are soooo expensive because of how wide the windows are. Thanks so much for the ideas!!

I totally understand wanting coverings on these windows. I would too. If nothing else, it can feel creepy in the night to have that black glass staring at you.

Good news, there are great roman shades, (with a ton of fabric choices) available now that have no cords, &/or loop chain cords. You should for sure consider mounting them up high, well above the window trim. This will visually enlarge the window, and will offer you the ability to pull them up out of the way of the glass affording you with the most natural light possible. and depending on where you shop for them, they can be very cost effective. (even Target used to have some, I haven't checked lately)
