Window treatments

I need some advice! How would you furnish the windows in our lounge room? There are 3 long French doors (with a separate window over the top of each) and then 2 smaller windows on the adjacent wall. I like soft roman shades but am unsure whether they would work over the whole French doors? If I used curtains should I do them at the same height for the smaller windows (ie all the way from the roof as on the French doors?) would a mix of curtains over the French doors and soft shades over the smaller windows on the adjacent wall work? Should they match or could I have neutral curtains and brown/natural fibre shades over he small windows? If anyone can post any photos of how it might work I'd love to see!

I'm also not sure how the curtains will fit in between the doors as the light fittings are there. The style we are going to decorate in is kind of a Ralph Lauren traditional/transitional/plantation look...

You can buy wood blinds that fit the doors and are secured at the bottom so they stay in place. I had mine custom made at Lowe's and love them.

Love the room...I would have to ask are window treatments used for privacy to block out sun or just a decorative feature that you want to add to the room. These questions may determine what type and style of treatment to use for this space. For me if I didn't have to I wouldn't cover up the French doors at all - they are beautiful. The other two windows could just use some curtain panels on either side of the window with your curtain rod hung only as high as the top of the window frames above the French Doors. Then you would have to decide on colour, which depends on what else is going in the space. Hope this helps somewhat.

I love the softness of this look. The voile gives the area that sensation of warm space. The color in the image does not match with your style but it is just and idea. You can turn them natural and white or black and white if you want to risk a little. By the way your space is gorgeous!!!!! Good luck!!

If you are going to use a rug or rugs in this room most designers will recommend that you choose your rug first because your rug covers such a large space and basically grounds your room's design. You can easily choose window treatment fabrics based on the main color / colors of your rug, creating a well harmonized deco. Best Regards

Not sure if this an option for you, but have you considered leaving the windows just as they are - no window treatments at all. It looks so clean and crisp....not to mention, easy care and cleaning.

I would do the roman shades on the doors and the curtains on the windows. Hang the curtains to just below the ceiling. You could also do shades all the way around. You can use two different materials for the doors and the windows (as long as they coordinate). I have a cream solar shade on my French door and dark woven wood shades on my windows.

You can do a search here in photos, of curtains on French doors, and see amazing inspirational ideas.
Your room is fabulous. What a great project to have. Show us the pictures when done, ok?

If you decide to go with wood blinds, I'd match the color to the trim by the floor. If you opt for no wood, I'd paint the wood white. Right now, to me, the wood jars with all the white.

I just took a second look and you are right about the sconces being in the way of the panels. I would do the roman shade on the glass portion of the door only. Do not cover the transom. Then you would hang the curtain panels at the same height. Or continue on with the shades. It looks best if the heights all match.

No curtains on any of this. Light the outside a bit so at night the windows are not black. Especially do not cover the top of any window (I know it is done all the time) because that is the best light of all. If need privacy screening, do shades from bottom up since that is where the people are and the light remains open at the sky level.

cindy is right at the top nothing if need be. Window treatments are my business for 27 years and if I say nothing, I'm broke but nothing. The doors are the beauty of the room.

    1. Soft sheers as suggested mounted between the transom and the doors. (not on traverse, but loops so can pull back

    2. If privacy an issue use a cellular shade mount under door jamb with remote it will dissappear when you dont need it

    3. Solar shade mounted on the trim between transom and doors and cover with a valance to match trim it also goes away and is cheaper than the cellular

Thanks Deb. I agree with your suggestions in regards to the sheers and privacy with the shades....one thing that bothers me about the room is the dark baseboard. Not sure if that is an issue, but you may want to consider painting that out. Unless there is a feature that we can't see in the room it goes with. I find it distracting.

Thanks for those suggestions! After reading he comments I am thinking about just leaving all the doors and just putting sheer or fiber shades/blinds on the windows (as these windows look over towards the neighbors house). There are no other privacy issues...the doors look over the garden and pool and beyond that is a golf course, so it was really just for the 'look'. I thought the same about the dark wood but unfortunately the inner doors in the house are all this dark wood and also he feature fireplace...as in attached photo. I guess it could all be painted white and I think we will consider doing that at some point. A big job!

I have another dilemma upstairs in the master bedroom! There is a small dressing/sitting area on the left when you walk in which has the same French doors with he window above opening onto a terrace...then when you continue into the bedroom there are more French doors opening into the same terrace...but these have no window above...and on two other walls are four windows (two on each wall) each at an even lower height that the French doors. How would you dress them all and at what height to create a dark room? My husband likes it dark to sleep!!

Sorry I think the windows are actually the same height as the French doors that don't have the window along the top!
