Bathroom layout ideas

When looking at bathroom ideas, its becoming noticeable that our bathroom layout

is a bit funky. It is a small bathroom (I believe 5x8). When you open the door the toilet faces faces the vanity and there is a corner shower next to the door.

Here is a bad drawing of the layout:

Right now we are just looking at replacing everything and extended the shower out.

I am concerned about 2 things:

1. If we extended that shower, will it look/be cramped trying to get to the sink>

  1. Clearance from the end of the toilet to the new vanity. I read it should be 21 inches. It might be right at that, but still might looked cramped with the longer shower.

So if I am going to be most of this myself, would it be difficult to move waste lines myself?

What is a common layout for a bathroom this size?

I think you need a plumber because I think your best layout would involve moving all your fixtures. It would be best to use graph paper and mark existing sink, toilet, shower, doorways and windows.

It would be nice to put your shower on the wall opposite the entry door. Then put the toilet next to the shower on the right wall. Then a small sink to the right of the doorway next to the toilet.

What about rotating the toilet 90 degrees so that the front faces the door? Then extend the sink plumbing so that a small vanity would be to the right of the toilet, on the back wall. Personally, I don't see how you have room to extend the shower and still have room to turn around in that small space.

Any way to have a left hand swing door instead of one that opens towards where the shower currently is?

valpogal47: We were already thinking about rotating the toilet. I am worried about being able to get around as well. When it gets closer to go time, we will mock it up and make final decisions then.

schicksal: We were going to change the door from a swinging door to sliding barn door

If I am reading information correctly, would it be possible to to just change the drains and put the shower drain where the toilet drain is and vise versa? I believe they used pvc when building so I should just be able to cut out and reattach.

This is a standard 5x8 bathroom layout. It makes the best use of the space.

OK, I guess we can't post HTML posts to photos anymore. That bites. But it's what karenseb described above: tub/shower against back wall, toilet and sink along RH wall.

What type of foundation do you have: concrete or basement/crawlspace? That will tell you how feasible it is to move plumbing around. Supply lines are typically not much problem. Drain lines and vents are where it gets more complicated.

We have a crawlspace underneath (actually am gong to replace all plumbing in whole house first ). The only problem is that I don't think a bigger shower is in our budget. As I price out everything the wife wants, and what we need, with a small shower we are pushing the budget, so everything may just stay the same and update everything

If you're replacing all your plumbing then I'd definitely start from scratch on the floor plan and rearrange everything. Easy peasy and you'll have a much more functional space.

What is it about a larger shower that puts you over your budget? Are you DIY-ing this? If so, then you're talking just a little more tile, a larger shower pan. Not big dollars at all unless you're using some $20/sf tile or something. We gutted and rebuilt an entire bathroom this size for under $2K in materials. And we replaced a window and put radiant heat under the tile, so you can do it for even less.

If you're looking to save money, then re-use the toilet and vanity for now. But man, while you've got the plumbing torn out, don't miss the opportunity to really improve the room.
