I am a freelancer who often works from home, and who lives in a small apartment in New York. Because space is such a premium, I am hoping to significantly optimize how I use my space, without it feeling overly awkward. Aside for an alcove for my full bed, a kitchenette and a tiny bathroom, I have one main room from where I often find myself working during the day (the "home office") and also in which I relax at night (the "living room").

The room has a flat screen TV mounted on the wall, which is across from my sofa. The TV is about 6 feet from the facing sofa. With a little help from a tech savvy friend, I was able to turn my flat screen TV into a super-sized monitor for my computer, in the hope that I could find a way to set up a "desk" of sorts and work there during the daytime.

The dilemma, of course, is that my "desk" will be under my TV in my living room. How to make this work as smoothly as possible, easily transforming the space back and forth?

My work chair is a clunky classic Aeron chair. The good news is that I have found the perfect spot to wheel it away and out of site at the end of the work day. But aside from that, I'm a bit lost on how to set up a comfortable work station that can "disappear" or tastefully blend in with the living room at night (e.g. dealing with computer wire management, desk type and size, etc.).

My needs during the work day are rather minimalist. Aside from reviewing my mail, I rarely need access to printed materials, pens, staplers, and so on. I figure some type of minimalist "U" shaped desk, with ideal dimensions of 27" H, and roughly 26" W and 24" D, would provide a perfect platform upon which to place my wireless keyboard and mouse. Then at the end of the workday, I thought I could find a place to set the U desk aside, perhaps set it alongside my sofa and use it as a table?

I don't have a good concept of who may make these "U desks", except for perhaps a bare bones Parsons desk? I haven't even begun to consider wire management either, and I'm sure there are other considerations as well.
