if you are doing it in preparation to sell then be cautious. if you are doing it to please yourself you can always repaint it the rest of the wall color if it doesnt work out for you.

Accent walls have been overused and abused. They can make a lovely (and yes, contemporary) statement, but make sure that the wall you're accenting is ACTUALLY AN ACCENT WALL. If you look around a room and aren't sure which wall should be the accent, then NONE SHOULD. Only a wall that is a major focal point should be highlighted.

A smallish room should not have an accent wall. A very large odd shaped room can benefit with one.

I confess: I hate accent walls.
Hate them.
Then I was faced with my bedroom. It just seemed to lack depth. I love the soft yellow walls (Benjamin Moore Hawthorne Yellow - best yellow ever) but it needed an anchor.
So I did it. I compromised my integrity and I painted the wall behind the bed a chocolate brown.
I wouldn't call it an accent wall - it's just a wall painted a different color than the rest of the walls.
At least that's what I tell myself.
(It did the trick and it looks great...integrity be damned.)

haha I also hate accent walls but then I recently painted the wall behind my tv "licorice" so it would disappear

when I think dated accent wall I think dated 90s colors like forest green and maroon and gold. but I do agree that it should be a deliberate focal wall - otherwise I don't think you need one
