What were they thinking?

To combine Gardenweb and Houzz?

Not even close to being the same type of site. Houzz is hoity toity like watercress sandwiches, Gardenweb is (was) comfy cozy like a warm blanket and hot chocolate. Anyone seen the babka? Who moved the babka?

I agree, May Flowers. There are aspects of the new arrangement that don't suit me but the new owners seem very responsive and I think it's a pretty soft landing, all things considered.

I agree with kswl and may_flowers. And to me, there was not much that was "cozy" about the antiquated and clunky GW format. It was just familiar. It's really time to stop complaining and either adapt or move on. What is really not appealing is to drop in here only to see endless new complaint threads. Let's talk about decorating.

Day by day I am getting a little more used to the houzz format, it's hard to abandon something that was so familiar.

To be honest I see more FB groups (and accounts) going by the wayside than anything else these days. Especially on the technical or detail-oriented type of subjects. I don't see forums going anywhere anytime soon, perhaps changing in format some as in the BBS/newsgroups -> GW style board -> UBB -> what we have now type shift.

I have to agree with May and KSWL. I really hate the expanse of white but all in all I am liking it more each day. I count us as being fortunate to have a place to still converse and ask questions and give and receive advice.

I can't figure out how to 'like' the posts above, but I agree 100%. I've been on GW more now that it has switched, and would like to see more threads about decorating. I also hope that we will get some new perspectives and new people posting on GW threads; some of the houzz advice threads have hundreds of posts, and there seem to be people who are interested in providing decorating advice just like the GW folks do.

Change is hard and we all started the week kicking and screaming but I'm adjusting to the new format and am grateful we still have this forum. Just remember, it may look different but if we all hang in there it can be just as cozy as before.

I too am slowly figuring things out. I currently have a couple of cliches but I'm hoping my kids can figure it out for me. For some reason my cursor is doing funny things and parts of a comment that I might type suddenly highlights green and disappears. That started yesterday. I found the test sight which has helped me figure out an issue I was having. It;s been a challenge but that's ok.

I see lots of familiar faces and hope to see more.

Overall, I'm adapting. I like a good watercress sandwich, sometimes. But the white background is really causing me eye-strain. I've dimmed my computer screen down to the next to the lowest setting, but it still seems awfully glare-y.

I agree with Schicksal (name reminds me of Hölderlin) - I belong to several professional forums that are quite active, including ones in woodworking, AutoCAD, furniture finishing, UK Handymen (for British electrical advice), etc. I have found the British and Australian fellows on those sites to be most helpful, even if we speak a somewhat different language. They seem somewhat amused that I have trouble understanding them. I hired an electrician from England yesterday (for my house), and I had a bit of trouble understanding some of what he said as well, but the point is, I can adapt. The guy I hired to install doors for me was Australian, and I had a bit less trouble understanding him than I did the Englishman. They both called me "mate", however.

    J. Robert Scott, it drives me nuts that you aren't Lars anymore (you were Lars, weren't you?)

    That's Lars? Who knew. Publickman.

I've been on GardenWeb for about a dozen years and was very active on the gardening forums for a long time. But I become totally frustrated with the antiquated format of it and stopped participating a couple of years ago. Meanwhile, I became active on Houzz about a year ago and was delighted to see GardenWeb and Houzz combined recently! I think I will become active in the gardening part again now!

Frankly, I'm tired of the whining. It is what it is.

Every new thread bumps a home decor post off the front page when we want to get back to business. Other forums are keeping it down to one thread. Since we are the only forum with a Conversations side (which we demanded on the first day ;)), and since it already has threads about the change, let's use those threads. See you in Conversations for cheese and whine?

It isn't costing us a cent. Count your blessings.

Thanks yaya. I was having trouble with posts that had already been 'liked' but realize that I was clicking the # of likes instead of the thumb.
