best way to fill holes in kitchen cabinets

I am going to paint my very dark kitchen cabinets White or pale gray in the hopefully not to distant future. The Hardware is terrible and I would like to either replace it with something more attractive, or install door opener hardware on the inside so that I can just push on each cabinet for it to Pop open for me. How do I get the holes filled so that there is no patched hole mark when I paint? I am looking to do this switch on a tight budget as we plan to gut the kitchen in six to eight years. The kitchen is on the North side of the house and very cave-like in feel.I have 28 pulls now. 3 would Need to stay (Refrigerator, pantry, and drawer under the stove). The ugly yellow tile will go bye bye too with a Treatment over the top.
