My first real gardening venture this year

The sun is out, it's 80 degrees in my unheated greenhouse this afternoon, did a bit of tiding up in there then decided to do a bit of cleanup outside. Cut the rest of the old foliage off the hellebore, there are a mass of seedlings under the plants, some of these will be potted up for our garden club's plant sale later this year the rest will end up in the compost bin.
Cut back some of the large sword ferns and pruned a couple of roses. Things are starting to sprout and emerge from the earth, spring is definitely in the air.

A piece of my Akebia vine had escaped the arch it's planted on, snuck along the ground and up a corner post of my lathhouse so spend a half hour untangling and yanking that out. Had a quick look at my pot ghetto, everything I had stashed there for the winter look like they've come through just fine.
The 'Giganteum' and 'Globe Master' alliums I bought and planted last fall are up along with a few others including several 'Christophii', I love this one, will buy a few more in the fall.
Probably be a wee bit stiff tomorrow :(

Annette , sounds like you had a lovely time preparing for spring ! Also so crazy that you and I are in the same zone ( actually you are one step ahead! ) and yet we are so far apart . Boggles the mind !

Do you have the lath house covered in clematis ? I hope I am recalling correctly . Do you have any pictures of it to share ?

We are in for at least a week of brutal cold here in nashville . I visited a local nursery looking for some seeds. I came home with a cute weathered look bird chime type thing ... No seeds. It sure felt good to pretend like spring was almost here ! I also ordered a handful of roses . (Shhhh don't tell dh!)

lilyfinch, here's a couple of pictures, not the best but will give you a bit of an idea. The lath house was built to house my fuchsia collection, 250 +. here's a partial picture of it.

When the clematis 'Montana wilsonii' covered it it got too dark inside for fuchsias so I gave most away, only keeping a few. Here's a not so great picture of the clematis growing over the lath house, it completely covers the whole roof now and drips over the sides, bonus it's scented, smells just like chocolate.

Glad you had a productive day and know that you will remind yourself tomorrow that working outside is worth the aches. I enjoyed reading about your and other's gardening during your early springs.

80 is downright hot! Last week's mid70s in southern KS were too hot for us. Glad for the air conditioned hotel room after spending a day walking around the zoo and park.

A soft purple lap robe is bundled around me as I try to stay warm in the very cold weather here tonight. 20 F above tomorrow before the temps drop for the rest of the week. Will get out to walk and do a bit of shopping.

Guess we were typing at the same time. What a lovely clematis. Sad to have to give away so many of your fuchsias but imagine they were a lot of work to keep watered and groomed.
Too cold for that chocolate smelling beauty in my garden.

So nice to imagine spring and warm weather - it has been brutally cold here the last couple of weeks. Cannot wait for spring, but then, I guess I have to! Annette - are you shaken??

Just what I needed this morning - views of your sunny garden and hearing of seed buying and garden chores. It's freezing cold here also, but it won't be long until I'm off again mowing, weeding, trimming, planting..........maybe I'll sit back and relish these last days awhile longer. : )

ah to be in bc. how very beautiful your garden is. planted a couple of new alliums-very fancy ones-last autumn. however. what looks like grass in this pic is allium sphaeracephelum which after years of good manners has decided on world or at least garden conquest. laying bricks today in preference to pulling the golden hops out of the lilacs.
