I just found these fun orange custom made chairs by Tom Gibbs, (although they've been sold) but I think we could find you some similar ones. You may even want to consider painting some wooden chairs orange...to tie in with your orange sofa in the living room. Something to think about.

Windsor in white if picking from those. i dont think gray goes with this room. more golds would be good. and white will look nice against the wood.

I'd like to see you soften the room with some fabric. Upholstered host chairs would do the trick. Pretty plates on easels layered with some family photos or artwork would be nice. Get some color up there. Yes, to a funky chandelier.

I agree with maraly the blue is too dark. A lighter blue or a gray would look good.

Here are some suggestions. I have the mission chairs and love them. The wall photo is my 1928 bungalow farmhouse dining room with light plaster walls and original woodwork. I added lighting ideas as well that might work in your space.

Go with tall light colored chairs, this will help lighten the mood. There are practical light colored fabrics. The room reads very dark currently. That's not bad but the right chairs are crucial. As for the mantle, less is more, don't get carried away. You'll know it when you've found it. It isn't looking correct now. Another thought is hire a talented designer for a few hours. You won't regret it.

Thanks. The tall chairs that were light sadly didn't work with the room and we are selling them. I think we need short ones so the table is more displayed. While, I am sure there are practical fabrics and we were looking at RH chairs in Perennial fabric, it just makes me feel like I'm going to constantly concerned with kids and I want it to be a room they can eat spaghetti, do art projects, etc. I almost wonder about painted yellow chairs? Any other ideas on kid friendly ones? What would you put on the mantle? I've tried lots and also nothing. I'm now leaning towards some white matte german pottery circa 1960 that has a more modern vibe. But would love any thoughts!

Do you like acrylic chairs? The tobias chair from Ikea is comfortable and easy to clean and it's pretty inexpensive. I have little kids and they also use the dining room for painting, etc. I purchased knock off Series 7 chairs from Restoration Hardware (magnus) with the idea that some day I will upgrade to the chair I really want.

I don't think I would do colored painted chairs in here - might give too much of a cottage look unless the chair itself was very funky (for me I did not love the Windsor chairs in here - conversely I think they would be cool in a more contemporary space).

I really like that tetrahedron light if you can find something a larger size. I like that it's slightly off-round.

I think I may give the eames a shot. I wonder if I will like them better when they are all in there rather than the hodge podge look I had going on. The arm chair is really not comfortable to me, so I'd be sticking with the side chairs (which are a dream with my short legs!). What light fixture would you pair with the Eames?

I wouldn't paint the mantel - it is pretty as is. Hubby just stripped 4 coats (including an interesting pink) off an 1880's cherry mantel for our house. Love your wood!

For the chandelier, I was thinking a little bling (something unexpected) and not too heavy. I love the bubble on in the houzz photo with the MCM meets craftsman dining room. The first photo may be a little too blingy. Check out the lightology link... I like the lightology one because it's a little bling, the globes mimic the rug design and the curves of the eames chair. (And, it's not $5k!)
