Walkway hedge

So I have a flagstone walkway that leads to my house from the street. Just Sunday as I was prepping one of garden beds I read in a ARE catalog that you can use polyantha roses to create an informal hedge or formal I suppose. The idea struck me!!!! What if I planted a rose hedge. Oh! What got me was an 'everblooming' hedge! So now because I'm fairly new to roses and gardening for that matter I need advice. I currently have liriope planted which is invasive I must say and they pop up everywhere, they've also been hit of miss as you'll see some have died. This will definitely be some investment so i want to do my research first. ( lesson learned the hard way of an amateur Gardner!)

Thank you

Elce

Lilyfinch, I currently have liriope planted. Evergreen but a pain at times. I have heard of fairy and I already have Marie pavie but for me it hasn't been in constant bloom which I wouldnwant. It's small though which is nice. I'll check out the fairy and do some research. The wonderful hubby built that arbor ☺️☺️

What zone/area are you in and do you have a color you are looking for?

Yes. First, where are you located. What would do well for you would vary with location.

The most successful double hedge, framing a walkway, that I have ever seen was done with many very-closely-planted 'Icebergs.' But that's great in SoCal, and perhaps not elsewhere. Even the size of mature plants will vary with environment.

The bush-form Polyanthas, 'Mlle. Cecile Brunner' and 'Perle d'Or' could be used that way, and look GREAT. And 'International Herald Tribune' could make a lovely, compact, low double hedge.

But most roses aren't going to bloom "continuously", unless you are more or less continuously deadheading. Even Polyanthas will have periods of full bloom, and times when they are busy producing new buds.

I'm in zone 7/8 in Dallas texas.

Then, likely not Iceberg, which I think might blackspot for you. And probably not IHT, either. But the Polyanthas -- Mlle Cecile Brunner and Perle d'Or, for instance, WOULD likely work for you.
You know what I would do -- I'd explore the website of the Antique Rose Emporium:

    Antique Rose Emporium

. . . with particular attention to their "Small Shrubs" category. Their size and disease-resistance descriptions would be very relevant for you. (And even out here in Southern California, I've found them terrific to deal with.)

I am starting cuttings of "Sweet Chariot" to use along walkways here but I have no idea how they might do in your area

And which climber have you selected to train up onto the arbor? C'mon, we need all the details!

Cecily, you're funny! on the right side I have a yellow lady banks that is about 2 years old and she wasn't doing that great. I bought her way before the arbor and the first year I started this gardening hobby so you know walk into lowes and buy anything on sale and then get home and do research! Yup! Then on the left I have a confederate jasmine. ☺️☺️ The lady yellow banks looks so bushy and green I can't wait for it to start blooming. From what I've heard that should swallow it. We'll see. I want all year long evergreen foliage so lady yellow banks does that for me. I'll have to figure something out for more blooms throughout the year though.

Good choice! Lady Banks should definitely do the job.

Hi ladies. Wanted to update you and post a pic of this years progress wit the lady banks. I took this not at peak when it was in full bloom but almost. The jasmine is also starting to get fluffier with new growth and it might bloom tomorrow since it's been raining today and might be somewhat humid. I'll snap a pic when in full bloom and update.

Beautiful!!! Did you decide to do any walkway roses? I've inly seen lady banks once , and it was so beautiful !

I'm still trying to decide what I'm going to do there. I was researching last night small shrubs and have come across a few I'd be interested. The DH said we have too many roses. Whaaaaa??!!! I didn't think that was possible, lol. I'll definitely keep you guys updated once I do decide.

    Check my recent thread: http://forums2.gardenweb.com/discussions/3790866/small-polyanthas-deep-red-pink-or-white?n=34

MANY great suggestions there. You have many more options in your zone, however, I finally went with Margo Koster, ToothFairy, the Fire Opal Kolorscape and Mlle Cecil Brunner

The DH said we have too many roses.

Explain to him that it isn't possible to have too many roses. It's something he needs to learn. ;^)

Take a look at the Drift roses for your path. Peach Drift would look particularly good.

Nope not possible to have too many. My DH gave up on that thought long ago. Now he just stands aside and lets me do just what I want to do. This week its starting to work the ground for a new bed.

You ladies are hilarious! Just left calloways and their roses were just in horrible shape I was so disappointed. They are also so expensive and since I need so many they wouldn't be feasible anyhow. I did see peach drift and they look so good even without blooms. I'm going to assume there is no fragrance?

No fragrance , but a clean beautiful growing and all season blooming rose ! I actually have quite a few in front of my house that will be blooming soon. Mine are taller than I expected but a perfect mistake in this area. I'll post pictures in a couple weeks!

emrogers, you need to show this (scroll down to HOW TO COUNT ROSES) to your husband. I think you'll find that you actually have at least half as many roses as you THINK you do (wink, wink).
