It looks better already. I pulled these chairs from another room I'm trying to redecorate but they clash. Any recs on the style of chairs? I know the round table has to go too

Actualluy those chairs and the sofa go very well together. Can you move the round table between the chairs.

Looks great! The round table is beautiful but overscale for the sofa and too tall for the arms of the chairs. Do you have a large foyer where it could serve as a centered foyer table? A round table that comes within 1" of the chair arms will work. If you don't have a round one, use a square or rectangle, but straighten the chairs up with it. Do you have a sofa table, console table or credenza? The art needs to be lowered so the center point is 5' above the floor. Take a photo of it and maybe I'll come up with something.

We love our boxer but he always finds his way into every pic. I love the round table but it sadly doesn't go anywhere. I wish I had a grand foyer for it; maybe some day. The 'art' piece doesn't have to stay here but it works best here than anywhere else. The problem is that with the couch centered the room is pretty narrow and there's no room for any furniture if I want to be able to walk around the couch to the dining area (which isn't necessary I guess-there's another doorway to the kitchen). There's roughly 28" on either side of the couch. I've kinda been wanting to do floor to ceiling photos in a grid. Maybe that to fill the wall?
Also, y'all really think the chairs and couch coordinate ok? The colors are really similar. Maybe a small lumbar pillow to detract from the all-blue?

a new rug will really pull this together

I know the table is too tall, but could you try it? also it would allow you to pull the sofa and chairs a little closer to the wall

I think the trick is go get a rug with several shades of blue and some red and for that nothing like an oriental rug. They also clean very well if they are 100 woo (go to overstock. best prices)

I would re-uohoslter both of the other chairs. they have great shapes.

creating areas, with rugs is your best resolve, it will also help tie spaces together.

Just a thought, but I would slide everything over to the window wall so yo have a walk way along the long wall.

Then you can place a lamp and table between the chairs and. Sofa table behind the sofa with a pair of lamps and electrical it's can go under the furniture to the window wall for power

yeah, I was going to say "29 inches on each side of the couch" really sounds like "a perfectly nice 35 inches on one side of the couch to walk by, plus a foot for a small end table or floor lamp on the window side." don't get trapped by centering -- think in terms of functional units. the (larger area) rug may help with that.

I adore your boxer. He picks the perfect spot. I like the sofa w/ the 2 chairs but pull them to the wall side so you have more room to walk around.

Actually snuggle up the sofa & chairs to your beautiful round table. Take photos again w/ that done. Okay?

Thank you so much everyone! I tried the table between the chairs and it's just too big (tall and wide). It may be hard to tell from the pics but those chairs are pretty petite. I'm going to steal a rug from another room to see how it looks! Any recs on color to redo chairs? Also, my sister is bringing me back this rug from India-it may be too wild with the curtains but I guess I won't know 'til I get it...

I did not mean the big table between the two chairs but something smaller and probably round. Something funky and unenxpected.....thinking tjmaxx or marshalls or ross.

I'd be basing the entire room on that rug once it arrives! That is your color way, style note and focal point.

Ok so I took this out of my daughter's room for an idea and it's too small but having an idea of what a rug will look like there is exciting. I won't keep the green round table there but does that look like about the right size (though it's a little tall I think)-are the rules on heights of end tables? Also-for future reference should the chairs be squared off? Thank y'all SO much for all your help! Really LIKE this space....just need to bring a bit of the red (Orange?) in curtains down to the sofa....to tie it to rug...ditch the clue patterned pillows and get a couple in the reddish-orange color.

Move everything to one side or the other to create a walkway. Lose the big table; someone is looking on craigslist for it right now. Then go totally eclectic.

Bring the chairs in closer together to the side table. You're trying to create a sense of intimacy on a conversation area like this. Plus only those with Monkey arms will be able to comfortably reach the table.

The green table looks a little tall. I prefer a side table at the height of the arms or a hair below. (Others will say a hair above, but I don't think it looks good that way.)

And if the side table is square or rectangular, square the chars. With a round table you can angle the chairs.

I think that rug will really funk it up just the right amount to add some zing!

Actually, Emily, the shape of the table wasn't as important to me as the black and white stripes. I wanted something that would contrast strongly with the rug and curtains, that wouldn't be too busy or compete, and that would say, "POW!"

lookin' good! take the plate stand off the top of the hutch :) add some burnt orange pillows. remove the extra tall vases, to much distraction over in the dining area. and I would move that awesome art piece from the dining wall to the wall behind the two chairs where the secretary desk is. Angle the chairs toward each other a bit. maybe add some pouf or square little ottomans to the room with the orange in?

@flairlighting Haha, I know the plate stand doesn't look good-I have no place for it so I just stuck it there :( I'll move it. Since the front door walks straight into this room-no entry way, and our house has a lack of storage, we were thinking of getting/making a hall tree where the secretary is. I know it's not ideal but we have no mud room, no entry way... I love that fox pillow and agree-need some orange. Thank you!

make the hall tree with hooks above a bench that opens for storage inside, and shoes go underneath, it wont be so bulky.

and now really thinking about the fact that you have no entry, and need some division of space, i think maybe you should try the couch where the chairs are....and swap them. perhaps then you can put a console table behind the couch...create some sort of entry if you will. plus im starting to think the dining side is 'heavy'

Are you a young family? I think the blue is very dated and tired. There are some fabulous ideas in houzz for for upholstering traditional style furnishings in more contemporary fabrics. Think very neutral fabrics with texture. Keep your big pieces neutral and simple and add color and style with the rug, pillows and accessories. If you use the wonderful colorful rug in the sitting are, try a solid color under the dining table to better define the two areas. I would paint the dining chairs and china cabinet, too. Check out all of the painting ideas with chalk paint. There are some great posters available online. And they provide an inexpensive way to bring great art into a space. Think less items that are large rather than too many small pieces.

consider plantation shutters, or simple shades to add a minimalist hip zen to the eclectic mix

I finally got my rug and an accent table! Now for some orange(?)/burnt pillows and to find new places for the round drum table and the secretary...and I think the plant stand is too tall and maybe in the way?

Plant stands are nice when tall but look nice in corners; maybe in a corner in the dining room!

Things look nice. A reading lamp on the round table between chairs or a pair of Pharmacy floor lamps low next to your pair of chairs, one for each. WayFair has some nice inexpensive floor lamps!

what about an antique brass version off above. i think the gold tone would be nice in this new amazing space! what color is the base of the glass top end table?

The one above has a very reasonable price of 145 dollars.

These lamps below both have reasonable price points. 112 and 42 dollars respectively! Who knew?

I dont thing the color of metal on the table needs to dictate the lamp tone. The room has an eclectic vibe going on and a new metal color could be a nice distinction; but......matching a table lamp to the table color would give the area more presence for table light combo. Could go either way. And it is nice to have choices!

Thanks everyone! Are yall suggesting two lamps or one and flanking the chairs or the sofa? It's hard to tell from the pics but I'm wondering if it's getting too crowded in here with the room combo of furniture?

I am going to chime in and say your room is coming along very nicely. I would put a lamp on the table between the chairs and a floor lamp (one of the ones pictured) on the end of the couch next to the wall. I think your plant stand looks too tall in front of the window....I would either put nothing or a lower table, trunk, chest or something like that for your plant.

the thing about between the chairs, where will you run the cord?

i would add the reading lamp over the sofa side. and call it a day

Run the cords under the furniture and plug into the non walking wall? Use an extension cord.

I would go for the Arc lamp by the sofa and window wall and find a double pharmacy lamp to go behind the little table but between the two chairs for ambient lighting and reading!
