Help me makeover this chair

After months of looking for an office chair, I finally settled on this chair from Craigslist. Any ideas how to make this over? I was thinking of painting it white and reupholstering it. Any fabric suggestions? Also attached is a picture of my office.

Vickie Daeley, what about painting the frame this kind of Aqua blue? Would this go with orange fabric?
Or should I go for a more muted blue such as this one?

Krishna, I Love the idea of Aqua, but I'm personally not a fan of the last two pics... The first looks too bright and the second looks too country... If I were you, I'd go to the paint store and check out some samples.

I'd actually pick out the fabric first then the paint. Blues are very tricky little creatures and will sometimes become chameleons when paired with other colors. I've seen the perfect blue become absolutely purple when paired with another color. I've also seen it go unbelievable green when paired with others. You may also find once you've chosen your fabric that another color altogether will be a better fit. So fabric store first, then paint store. It's much easier for paints to be mixed to the right color.

    Blues are tricky -I agree:)

Thanks for the sage advice whynottryit and jentnz! Found some fabric that I really loved at UFab's site. I'll put off painting the chairs until then. Thanks for the great ideas everyone! Will definitely post before and after photos.

I think that makes sense to get a fabric first. Also I was thinking more like a teal or peacock blue than the lighter aquas. Kind of like this combo with the orange.

How about painting the chair a shade of gray. It looks like there might be gray on your desk. And then add some color in the fabric seat.

Keep it simple. Paint the chairs the same white that's in your office, then get a gray patterned fabric for the seats that blends with your gray walls.

Or better yet, find a fabric that matches that Hermes orange/red for the seats.

I really like your room! Aqua and wild orange printed chairs sound great. Please do post photos of the finished project!

White chair; gray fabric on seat because the desk chair will be tucked into your gray/white desk area.

I would definitely paint the chairs white, and for the seat possibly use a darker grey fabric with some color to it like yellow and white to add interest. You may need to use the chairs in other places within the house when needed, so would recommend a fabric that goes well in other areas of the house.

White chair with grey fabric would be really nice or if you wanted a pop of orange - this fabric is kind of cool and would look nice with white chair.

I don't know, I think painting the chair black with some orange on the seat would be great. Or the aqua with a simpler upholstery. There's a lot of white between the shelves and the chairs in the seating area. Cute room.

What color are the lamps? I would pain the chairs the same color. They look kinda pink? I also vote a metallic color like gold or silver.

Which fabric did you find? I noticed your comment but would love to see a pic of it.

Fun chairs! I'd upholster the seat in orange and paint the wood brown.

You could paint the chairs in black lacquer and a print seat cover (should be comfy since it will be an office chair)

    Here's a tip.

Before painting, you can apply a coat of dewaxed shellac (such as Zinsser's Sealcoat) as a primer. If in the future you wish to strip the paint off, shellac will come off easily and take the paint with it.

Dewaxed shellac is compatible with most types of finishes and will stick to almost anything. Still, it's always best to make a sample board to test product compatibility prior to doing the actual furniture.

I'm debating between these two fabrics....

I really like the first one.
Paisley gets my vote. One other suggestion - lower your curtains so they kiss the floor. Nice looking room!

It's always hard for me to pick a fabric from the computer because the samples are usually so small. I display the sample as my background picture and either stretch or tile it so it goes across the entire screen (usually tiling works better). This makes it a lot easier to see how the fabric will look in the room. For you, I think that it will be doubly helpful because your screen is right where you'll be using the fabric.

I think your choice is going to depend on whether you are trying to maintain your orange/gray/white palette or whether you want to add a bigger punch of color into the room.

    Hope this helps!

    I love them both.
    Super picks!!

Thanks for the advice whynottryit. I'll try displaying those fabric samples on my computer monitor.
Finally decided on a glossy black paint for the chairs...
I love the lacquer paint with a chevron pattern. Grey on grey or whatever goes with your color palette.

I really like them both -for different reasons. But I'm sure you'll pick the best (seeing them on your computer screen)... And, by the way, your new desk chair is so cool -Great find!

Oooh, the paisley....green chair? Dark gray chair? Not white, but creamy ? Definitely the paisley!!!!!

Try chalk paint and wax or flat latex and rub min was over it,depending on your color scheme pick a nice durable fabric for seat
  • 11 years ago

I'm taking in all the previous comments. I think a white chair would blend in too much with the white desk and 2 white chairs sitting in front of it.
So I think either keep it super simple, such as a grey or black chair and orange or grey fabric. I think the orange paisley is a good idea.

The chair has enough structure and design in it, you want that structure to show. White would disappear. Black might be too severe, a grey might be interesting. About picking up another color.....the aqua or raspberry pink of the vases. I don't know. In any case, it's a small chair and you can always repaint it.

You might consider painting the chairs a very shiny black - like a laquer finish and for fabric, use a Chinese print with a white background and some orange in the design. Two types of pattern come to mind, either a toile or a chinoiserie. The black is also in the zigzag in front of the sofa. Black is always good and will anchor the room.

Green...! With either of your fabric choices, it will balance the Orange very nicely.
I prefer the Orange fabric, but both are great choices.
Like paisley print...but it brings in more colours to your room,
Paisley in Orange will be great or grey with orange red prints..
Such a cute space you have created congratulations
  • 11 years ago

Paint the chair orange (like your sofa) and the paisley fabric.

Love the pattern & colour of your coffee table..
Is that a diy project? Fabric?
Also feel the cushions on your orange couch could be more interesting...B&W or red of the lamps maybe!

    Dear Krishna,

I would paint the chairs the same colour as the desk and use an accent colour like the orange on the file boxes for the upholstering. Keep it simple so that your living space ties in and also your office space will not seem too crowded.

An orange velvet would be lovely.

Cream for the chair and this for fabric.

Thank you chuppi. The table is actually a $35 outcast from crate and barrel outlet. The top was chipped in several spots and I didn't know how to repair it so I just contact papered it in an interesting pattern.

Love that chair! I agree with painting it white. And the seat is a small area, you could probably pick up a few fabrics relatively cheap, fold them over and see what works best. someone commented that if you went with a white chair, it would not stand out- but i disagree if you go with a print that pops. I like the suggestions made to add some touches of orange in the pattern- the whole thing would be very well blended. I do love bamboo/chinoiserie chairs painted black, but i think it would be too much in your space.

Don't use cream-with all the true white you have it will look awful! Turquoise and Orange are opposite each other on the color wheel, so they DO work together,
This fabric may be too geometric, but the colors are interesting:

They have an orange floral too.

Paint the chair black, for sure. It will add crispness to that area and will tie in well with the rest of the room. The room is great, btw. No need for more geometric. Paisley or a large floral would be super. Buy fabric that you are attracted to. You've done a great job in the rest of the room. Trust yourself.

Whatever color you decide on for the chairs, keep the fabric on the seats plain.

After reading all the comments and seeing the fabrics...try going with an orange paint and a white and orange fabric like the ones from whynottry it or curraghgirl. Or try the same but in the aqua you like. Aqua paint and a fabric in white and aqua. Adding a gray in the fabric would tie into your bookcases. Either would add that pop. Your place is fantastic! My colors in my home are gray and white and navy..but after seeing your place Im going to add that pop too! Your new chair is a great find! Good luck!
