Is your past content on GW missing?

Yesterday, I went looking for my old comments, to see if the length of posts were cut off and if content was intact. If I highlight my screen name when I post something, according to that I've made over 8,000 comments on GW. Yet when I do a search of GW for all my posts, it only comes up with 364. If I search individual forums which I know I've posted to, it brings up zero on many . I've emailed to ask if they have actually lost that much previous content, and I'm waiting for a response. I wonder, have any of you attempted to review your old comments and found them missing?

I also did a google search for my screen name on GW and only came up with a few. I am surprised.

So, how do you feel about lost content from the past? Wasn't that a big part of GW, being able to find old discussions that held a lot of valuable information on one topic or another?

I haven't checked systematically, but I've looked at the FAQ's and some of the posts on the Gallery. Many of the FAQ's have been cut off and I emailed the houzz team to ask about it. They said they're working on it and they will be restored - the content isn't lost.

As for the Gallery posts, everything on the Gallery has been transferred to Discussions and some of my Gallery posts have been cut off. I haven't questioned the houzz team yet about this. I'm not happy but I'm giving them some time to make the transition.

No worries -- the content is still there. On some of the longer posts and FAQs, some were truncated during the transition. We will be restoring the information as soon as possible.

I also asked them what happened to the edit button I use to revise the FAQ's. I'll need this when the Spring Peeper reports come in.

They said:

"Hi Claire,

The FAQs are still a work in progress, so the editing button isn't present right now.

The Gallery and the main forum posts are now in the same area. If you want to bring a post to the top, you can just post to it to bump it up."

Thanks Claire for that update. Always good to understand what is going on. I'm not understanding why they have truncated content, only to have to turn around and undo it. Sounds like they've created a lot of work for themselves. Unless they are trying to save space needed to store all the content and this way they only have to restore what people notice and complain about?

I was reading in the Kitchen forum, that they truncated all the older threads on 'kitchen reveals' and removed the photos from the threads. The forum members brought it to their attention and so far they are restoring only a set # of photos to each thread. In one case, losing 73% of the photos and in another 90% of the photos. I don't understand that kind of response either.

In the case of Galleries, I don't think 'bumping it up' to the top of the forum posts, is an adequate solution. I would hope they are planning to make the correct adjustment at some point.

I notice that they are still not keeping unanswered threads at the top of the 'All Topics' page, but haven't noticed yet, whether the same is true on each individual forum.

I am seeing that Houzz is responding to requests for return of a variety of old GW functions. I think they started by migrating GW to the preexisting Houzz format and are now modifying it to make it more similar to previous GW functions. I think the old GW platform had become something of a dinosaur, so they really couldn't avoid the work involved not matter what they did. I've been checking out the update link that's at the top right of each forum main page and goes to a page discribing what changes they have made so far.

It's always interesting to hear a point of view from someone that understands the ins and outs of website programming. Something I have no experience with.

I've been checking out the update list as well. I've seen them respond to many requests. I see we now have 'bold and 'italics' ability in comments. Perhaps they are planning to make all the adjustments and it is just taking time. It's just that we all want to get back to using GW and not spending so much time adjusting to the new site. So it seems that if they don't make the adjustments quickly enough, people will accept the site as is and go back to using it instead of restoring it to the old GW function.

I'd be content if they make the major change of the interface to reduce the white background and create more contrast for the text. Then if we could search our old comments by pages instead of scrolling, we could then make sure all the content we are interested in preserving, have survived the move. At that point, I'd be ready to go back to thinking about gardening.
