I am not growing SG either. Not because it was too sweet but b/c it cracked so fast. I have found varieties with thicker skin to resist cracking. One of them is Black Cherry , one is red cherry and another one is yellow cherry.
I got the seeds from a heirloom/op package that I bought from Trader Joes.

No Trader Joe's near-by. Any specific suggestions. Don't like the cracking either so looking for a nice full flavored non cracking not so sweet varieties. Great photo, thanks for sharing.

Red Cherry and Yellow Cherry are these specific varieties or were you speaking in generalities?

The variety Large Red Cherry is a widely available and often cheap heirloom that can be found as seed packs at various dollar stores and sometimes Walmart. It is large for a cherry and has more of a real tomato flavor.

I've grown Black Cherry several times, they are my favorite cherry. Although in my case, I found they still cracked quite a bit, but they are so prolific, I just tossed the bad ones and still had plenty.

Try Amys apricot which had good flavor and wasn't too sweet. It also wasn't prone to cracking. I love SunSugar but you may find it too sweet also.

I do not care for Sungold either! Thought my husband and I were the only ones! I grew them for my daughter who loves them. But not this year. They take up too much valuable real estate. Casino Chip is a larger red cherry tomato that we like. It has a good flavor....like a real tomato, not sweet at all.

Mine cracked when it got too hot. It's still my favorite cherry tomato. There must have been 300-400 tomatoes on just two plants last summer.

Zzackery, which tomato variety were you referring to that cracked and had 3-400 tomatoes?

SunSugar is way less likely to split than SG and it is a favorite to a lot of people I give tomatoes to. It will split though if there is a lengthy period of rain, but we will pick them just before a drenching rain shows up.

Sun Gold was sweet and tasty. Production was average.
My complaints are that it cracked before you can say "AH". In our PNW we get a lot of rain all the time and that made it worse and the fruits were on the small side. Otherwise, it is a good cherry.

The Sun people have put out Sun Orange which is bigger and doesn't crack as much. I just eat the cracked one as I harvest. I like SunGold, but want to try others. I'm growing Nectar, which is sweeter than Sungold, Blue Berries, and Snow White. I mostly grow paste and sauce tomatoes. I started my peppers but will not start tomatoes until March 15th.

I also like Sungold, but my co-favorites are Black Cherry and Gold Gem. The latter is a hybrid from China by way of Park Seed and they claim it has a hint of citrus flavor. The flavor is unique in my experience and it is crack resistant and very disease tolerant.

Ralph thanks for the suggestions but no thanks for anything from China. Even organics have been raised in polluted water along with extensive heavy metals. I say no to China until they clean up their act.

I myself don't care if seeds are organic or not. Plus everything you use is from China. Like the keyboard you're typing on, the computers, everything Apple makes. etc. I have no plans to eat the seeds. I'm so turned off by anything called organic i actually avoid it. It's a marketing term, and I really dislike marketing ploys. Anything with green too, that really irritates me! Electric cars are more polluting than gas, but it's called green. neem oil destroys predatory mites, some of the worst toxins in the world are organic. No thanks!

Meanwhile, back to cherry tomatoes....I have heard "Blush" is a very good cherry. I am growing them out right now, so I can't really give my opinion. Taste is so subjective, anyway. I usually just watch the reviews and see what the majority thinks. That usually works out fine.

Drew, a computer and keyboards do not go into your mouth and you are certainly entitled to your opinion.

Fireduck, I too look for a consensus of opinions, however, there are a few on this website like Dr. Carolyn, the tomato guru, I pay particular attention to her recommendations.

Seeds don't go into your mouth either. And the pollution in China is not from seed production, but certainly from keyboard production. So it makes little sense to me what you say? Walk the walk if you talk the talk. I should boycott seeds, and not have them, but your keyboard is ok. Really? Wow!

Thanks Ralph for the suggestion. I will be trying Gold Gem for sure. And i won't even blame the woes in China on you.

I find the seeds labeled as "ORGANIC" just another gimmick.
It doe not matter if the seeds came from an organically grown plant or inorganically grow . Seeds carry just the genes.
One can argue about "Organic" fruit, but seeds ? Like drew said, unless you want to eat the seeds.
BUT having said all that , I have no problem with those who are organic purists.
Talking about alternatives to Sun Gold, yesterday I sow 4 different cherries from the seeds saved from store bought heirloom tomatoes. Not guaranteed that they be be better. We shall see in a few month.
